Just seen that KD is on GMTV this morning. Talking about his daughter Mia and autism. A survey was done that said over half of parents with autistic children have been criticised for their childs behaviour when out in public! Been there done that!!

DAmn, I missed it. I think KD does a lot to raise awareness of autism, he is great.

I'm also surprised it it just over half.

I get praise for 'such a quiet boy' can't do inspiring jealous rage emoticons on the I phone

My son is deaf and has aspergers. I had a lady staring at him (he is quite loud) she and her son just kept turning round and staring the whole way through a pedestrianised shopping area. In the end i lost patience and said and signed to my son "If that lady doesnt stop staring at us Wilf shall i give her something to stare at?!" She disapeared into a shop quite quickly after that.
Im seriously thinking of getting him one of the "im not naughty im autistic" tee shirts! Has anyone else got them for their children?

Thanks Lottie, the man speaks a lot of sense.

Lottie I have one of those t shirts for ds1 but he won't wear it; may well start using for ds3 now- him being small seemed to give him a get out clause but i think he's grown out of that iyswim

silverfrog · 27/04/2010 18:42

we have a few variations on"I'm notnaughty, I'm autistic" on t shirt for dd1. I can't say it ahs helped a great deal, I'm afraid, but ti has helped when we are forced, yet again to defend dd1 or her behaviour -people notice the t shirt then, iyswim?

We tend to put dd1 in one for big days out, or for travel (aeroplanes, etc) MInd you, last year, on our holiday flight, dd1 was wearing a t shirt that read "please be patientwith me, I have autism". that didn't stop theman nextto her yelling at her when dd1 got a bit upset on take-off (about 2mins, literally of squealing/shrieking. NOt a nicenoise, iadmit, but the old git hd already beenasked if he would mind swapping seats so that I could sit next to dd1, and he had refused. That gave him noleewayinmy book for then being annoyed with her)

Just listened, he's so articulate and passionate about it. A great spokesperson.

Magaly · 28/04/2010 23:08

good for him.

As well as the points he makes about other people giving you dirty looks, when you explain to people you know, friends, that your son is on the spectrum, they often do think that that goes hand in hand with being exceptionally good at something. That he must have a geeky gift of some description. like composing music scores or designing airplanes at 4 years old. no no no.

Magaly · 28/04/2010 23:09

lottie, today I cracked and decided to order a BAG with a snappy soundbite like that on it. have had too many people giving me dirty looks recently.

Magaly · 28/04/2010 23:11

ps, I guess, it's because he's obviously NOT a toddler anymore. I personally think he's got slightly better in the last 18 months, but because he now looks at least four (which he is) there is no 'awwww, toddlers' type sympathy now.

lottiejenkins · 29/04/2010 07:02

Magaly? What does the bg say and where did you get it from? [nosy emotiocon]

Well ages ago somebody on the sn board linked to a great site and it had loads of cloth shopping bags with slogans like 'i'm not naughty i'm autistic'. I haven't ordered one yet because the sites i've found were American, or they didn't do BAGS and I really want a bag not a t-shirt. I can keep the bag on me at all times, but unless I dress my son in the t-shirt ALL the time, then a t-shirt is no good!

Also, there are times when he is well behaved and would pass for 'nt' so on those occasions I don't want him to be wearing a t-shirt announcing that he's different!

Magaly · 29/04/2010 09:31

Waffle waffle, I decided to order one, but I haven't done it yet. My post(s) so Unclear!
