Do parents have right to see reports on their child?

Advice please - My dsd has already got a statement for adhd, earlier this year her new paed consultant decided he feels she also has asd and he was going to have this put on her notes and a new report done stating as such.

She changes to high school this year and the head of the high school asked us to obtain a copy of said report and forward it to her. Mu husband (I do not have parental responsibility) asked for this and the secretary of the paed consultant said to get the school to put the request in writing. Surely the parent of a child should be able to see the report done on their child?? or is that not the case?????

if you ring the hospital the paed is based at and ask for information governance, they should advice you how you can get a full copy of your childs notes - or this is how i did it anyway, not sure if different hospitals are different?! its free to look at the notes but costs to get a copy a set amount per sheet up to a maximum of £30 i think for the lot. It can take up to 6 weeks though i believe, i thin it took us about 3 weeks though it was a year ago so im not sure exactly. hope this helps

I thought it must be a given (UK law) that any report based on your child's dx/ consultation was forwarded to the parents along with GP, other relevant parties etc. at same time. This has been my experience from when ds was initially assessed through dx and onwards.

Is that not the case?

I think I may ring our GP's surgery and see what they say...maybe they will give us a copy?

We usually get copies of all letters from dd3s docs sent to the gp, but not ones that go between them, not quite sure how it works. If you want a copy of the entire file then it is usually done through medical records although you could always speak to PALS at the hospital and see what they could do for you. It comes under the data protection act, have a look here.

We saw paed earlier this month and when I called to ask if we were getting a report was told that letter would go to school but we wouldn't get anything. Think I will ask school for a copy of their records then.
