right. im putting in my application for Mother of the Year 2010 and it has come to my attention that I have been a terrible mother and ineligible.

So in order to apply in 2011, Ive decided to attack the areas where I have been turning a blind eye. And suggestions or storieswould be appreciated.

  1. Bottle and Dummies:
Slack, slack, slack. Watching far too much daytime tv to have read in my development manuals that both these things really should have been phased out 2 years ago. Both my boys (DS2 is 20months) are put to bed with a small milk bottle (bout 4 ounces) and a dummy. they sleep wonderfully thorough the night but refuse the milk in beaker/cup format. I do ABA, and they're all telling me to rip that band-aid off, to endure the screaming. And I know they are probably (as always) right, but DP is a nutrition freak and hates the idea of them not getting a good amount of milk (my 3yo ASD DS is an extremely picky eater, so hard to supplement otherwise). Just though people might have a few tricks to try before ripping...
  1. Doing number 2 on the potty. We has almost no problems getting DS to do wees on the potty but have been trying to get him to do number 2s for a couple of months now, no luck. He will wait for a nappy nad bed every time and gets angry being forced to sit for 5 mins before bed. Any thoughts?

oh yes, 2011 will be my year.

We have managed the bottle (replaced with avent spots cup of water)

As for the other 2, i am still stuck and dd2 is 4.1.

So i will be watching in hope that someone will be along with advice .

Will be watching with interest. DS2 is 3.1 and still has a bottle before bed. I have tried a cup but we havent been successful. He also has a dummy in most of the day.

The potty thing is way beyond us at the moment

we gave up the bottle at 4 . just went cold turkey and said "no bottle any more, would you like a cup of milk or water?" the first few nights he was very upset and wouldn't take anything, then he started having a cup of water and now he will happily have a cup of milk. wish i'd tried it sooner.

We gave up the bottle at 4.5 ish, he bit a big hole in the teat & i told him the shop didn't make big boy bottles so he would have to ahve a cup of milk before bed

Nappy for daytime also about 4.5, had to get over the bathroom phobia first but was then easy.

Dummies - mmmm well, a work in progress, he is 7 & they are a huge sensory comfort for him, he sniffs them, licks them & rubs them around his face (Yuck I know) - But he only has them at home, they help him to relax & they are not hurting anyone, so I guess i'll leave him for now!

Good luck!

ok, we still have dummys DD2 is 2.6years.
But we have a dummy box. It lives by the side of the bed and thats where she has to put them when she wakes and can get one out before bed. Took a few days for her to stop asking but she can go all day without one now.

As for bottle's we swapped them for spouted cups and again took a few days but works for us.

As for potty training we arent doing so well as she wont use potty, but will ask for toilet but then doesnt go

Hi, potty training for ds (3.5 Mod LD and posible ASD), going ok (I think!) just working on daytimes and wees only at the moment, but having a couple of accidents a day after two weeks. Have found LD nurse advice a bit counter productive, but HV been v supportive and lots of good advice, but maybe I just have a good one?

She gave me organisation info from course she went on.

Also i have bought really good training pants (from Wilkinsons of all places), nearly half the price of what they were on line, really comfy look like normal pants but with the bit inside that means although they get wet there is no puddle on the carpet! Means i get less stressed, which always helps!

hope that's useful info.

DS1 gave up dummy finally at around 4.5 years, we had a 'bedtime only' official rule (although this was always broken for long car journeys), ds2 (3.9) still has dummy at night and is very attached to it but like clarissimo we have a pot it lives in during the day. I guess we'll have to take it away eventually but really, you know, if it was his thumb he could have it in all night and we couldn't stop him, don't see that it is morally superior to dummies myself.

We didn't even start potty training ds1 (AS) till he was over 3 and then it still took a year to achieve reliable daytime dryness, he poos himself quite frequently and will have wet accidents if he's absorbed in something (and is very resistant to suggestions that he might want to go to the loo, he can be standing there weeing himself and denying that he needs to go ).

sorry, meant lisad123 not clarissimo (brain-going emoticon).

For dummies - my DS has obsessional crazes, and at the point we wanted to get rid of the dummies it was Fireman Sam. So we took him to the toyshop and bought him a Fireman Sam engine and figures, then at the actual toyshop, we asked him if he wanted to swap it for his dummies. He binned them there and then (also handy because I knew I couldn't retrieve them if I needed to, LOL). I expected a bad few nights but he was then fine, although he insisted on having the fire engine actually in bed with him for the first week

Potty - we were the same, wees were no problem but it took months for poo - we just kept persevering and offering and it clicked eventually, but it was prob around 6 months not 2. So honestly, I wouldn't worry about that part yet.

Good luck for 2011
