Please sign in if your child with SN might benefit from access to a toy hand-dryer

Following the success of DS2's "Henry" toy vacuum cleaner, and the introduction of the extra-noisy Dyson hand-dryers in toilets, I have telephoned Dyson this morning to ask if they could arrange access to a toy version of their hand-dryer.

The gentleman in the "airblade" department was open to the idea of helping, and has asked me to email him with further details. I guess the ideal would be a toy version with a volume-control, so it could start off very quiet, but build up to volumes more like those in toilets. We could share it around as our kids reached the stage where it might be of benefit (or maybe they would make more than one!).

Obviously Dyson would be able to view this thread online as mumsnet is public, so if you do sign in, you may wish to consider a temporary name-change.

Yep its worth a go, public loos are a no go since they introduced the new dryers!
& I know several children all struggling.

not something we needed, but sounds like a really good idea. lots of children with cp hate loud noises, so it would de sensitise(sp) them

Oh the Syon bods are nice, I had one of teh test drive vacuums years ago and even the security bods with their looks of concern (I was 38 weeks pg) were lovely

My ds3 isn't scared of the dryers but the opposite- is hyposensitive, I think a ytoy one would be excellent in saving me trekking around trying to find him one IYSWIM- same thing different angle.

Yes that would a handy toy for DS's sensitivity to these type of noises.

sounds like there is lots of potential interest.

Yes, definitely for DD. Having said that, my NT two-year-old is scared of hoovers and hand-dryers, too! Not sure it's limited to SN kids...

It's something we would be interested in too, DS1 who's 5 with CP finds them very difficult but will now tolerate being in public toilets where they are but gets very anxious about not using them. DS 2 who is 2 and NT is also scared of them, not sure if that's copying DS1 or not!

I know a fair few NT children that are scared of hand dryers too. A brilliant idea.

DD1 is scared of the noise but drawn to the sensation so approaches them with determined grimace. So yes please

DS, 6, also struggles with hand-dryers. Sometimes he likes the sensation, other times he refused to use them and dries his hands on my skirt

Yes I actually loked into having a hand drier installed at home at one point (I was cm'ing and ofsted would have loved it, and also I was trying to desensitise DS to them who was utterly terrified of public toilets because of them). A toy one would definately have helped, he is now a little less terrified of them.

We used to have a dyson vacuum cleaner and I couldn't use it whenhe was in the house his reaction to it was so strong, got a Henry and he likes it.

I'd have borrowed one from toy library had such a thing been on offer at right age. We seem to be mostly through that phase now, but air blades still freak him out as they are Soooso loud.

Volume control would be important. need to start out with hardly any noise at all.

Lou, my DS2 is the same, lovs the air but hates the noise.

I'd definitely buy one, there are a few "safe" toilets we can no longer use becuase they've got the Dyson ones.

OMG that woukld be fabby. Both my girls hate the things although dd1 is loads better, dd2 runs and sits in the corner with hands over ears

Would definately get one. Love the idea of building the volume. DS has gradually learnt to almost like them and then weve started coming across noisier ones where the threshold is obviously too high for comfort for him.

This sounds an excellent idea. My friend's son is terrified of them, would certainly be something she would buy.
