Early signs of autisim?

hey everybody! just joined up today as wondering whats what with autisim really....
(i dont understand all this abbrev stuff ! so bear with me )..
have 4 children, 13,9,15 months & 4 months.. the 15 month old concerns me greatly...
it all strted really when he'd fall off something and just get up seemily not bothered, maybe on a really hard fall he'll cry but other than that nope.. nothing, thisis what has me wondering... he does not wave, rarely claps, says no words yet that mean anything, kisses with a headbutt!, spins round and round, has to close anything that is open, drawers, fridge etc... fascinated with wheels on a car, HATES going to toddler/baby groups in fact the ones we've taken him to in the past we have just ended up leaving as everyone stares so much at us with 'the screamer' in the corner! shows no interest when out on the pushchair at things going by etc.. basically hes just happy at home, hates change.. over the weekend we tried to sit out in the garden to no avail, he just stood behind the duvet drying on the line with on/off crying.... I know that if i go to hv with all this she'll just think im having another crazy moment but i just know somethings not quite right...tip of the iceberg being the phone dropping on his head last night full pelt to which he just walked off... any suggestions/ ideas / comments would be most welcome xx

OT, thank you very much for all this info, I'll certainly look into it, as I said have hv on tues soca on thursady, I hoping Doc will be supportive over the change of diet thing, I suspect though that he will say don't do it, personally what harm can it do? And surely complete change of diet will help his skin??!! Anyone know if pesticides have an effect on this sought of thing? We live in the middle of a farm... Just wondering if it could be another factor.... Thanks again everyone .... annie x

Ooh ruth just seen your message , I'll have a look at that too, I wish I knew somewhere along the line a proffesional whoever it mightn't says' I fully understand your fears even at this young age, but let's crack on straight away anyway,' if only I think itmightbe an uphill struggle to start with, a hill I'm prepared to struggle up though ... There is a really good private professional in the south east (but she works all over england) specialising in early intervention if you email me i can send you her details....as I am not sure how to put a link on here without advertising someone!!

takemesomewheresunny · 18/04/2010 18:36

hi anniepan,

the stuff you say does resonate with ds1 (4, HFA) and 15m he was a v. different child, i was lucky and got intervention at 3 with portage. at 15m, no pointing, no speaking, fascination with wheels, opening closing doors, stuffing objects etc

anyway manage to get portage (portage) sorted myself by ringing, but also recommended by paed and this changed ds, opened up his world. at 4, talks, friends, so you never know. and this was only 1hour a week every 2 weeks for 9months.

he is v. young to be changing his diet to much, i can understand diet helping alot, but at this stage is it the way to go! ASD by nature are slow so he may develop in his own time, but early intervention is best, and maybe diet second.

forgot to say, ds still at 4 hates feeding himself, can, but tries v. trick in the book to get out of it. being first child i was happy to feed him till in the 2s, then good wise and got tougher.

Hey! It's tuesday and hv comes today, I'm super prepared and have even typed out a copy for her and me with bullet points! So I don't get all flustered or forget anything ! And she can take it away and not say in 6 months time she didn't know! Although she's normally a fab hv I still don't trust them purely as they have so much to do! Gonna jump in shower wash hair put makeup on all so I don't look like a post natel highly hormonal woman! ( remember I've just had ds 4) Wish me luck !

How did it go Piggle?

pigglepops · 22/04/2010 00:06

Mmmm well it's like this.... Hv ' I think he's probably got glue ear' me' well here's my list of points, do they all add up to glue ear' hv' no they are all normal' all this took till 7pm, yes that's right 7 pm!!! Anyway agreed about his diet though but on the basis of his skin rather than brain! , no reffering will be done till he's older!! Got the gp in the morning. So Try again then , thank you for asking angrywasp! X

pigglepops · 22/04/2010 11:59

Just been to gp, he says he's not sure about his diet as he knows nothing really about it ( atleast he's honest!) has referred us to peds straight away :!! Thinks it will be 6 to 8 wks, all on the basis of my list of things, how cab 2 proffesionals have such opposite ideas ! Hv nothing wrong gp has conCerns!

firsttimer08 · 22/04/2010 21:03

Good luck pigglepops ! Keep us posted on how it goes.

AngryWasp · 25/04/2010 11:59

Oh thank goodness. That must be a relief, being taken seriously at least.

Hope you get a dx of neurotic parent

meerkatsandkookaburras · 25/04/2010 15:50

hi, not read all the replies yet but just thought i would add, if you have difficulty getting a referral to a paediatrician try what i did and lie, i went to the gp and said that the health visitor is going to refer when she comes back of holiday but im worried and could they refer me now for my peace of mind that were on waiting list lol the gp did it no questions asked as i said hv was going to anyway!! worth a try anyway

pigglepops · 10/05/2010 21:14

Update! Had a call from the paeds today, the lovely doc rang me herself and said my gp had written to her and included my sheet in with it! She got it today and thought she wouldring ne straight away! She explained it takes 3 to 4 months for a refferal normally but she would like to bump us up the list and is coming for a home visit next week! I'm not sure if I'm thrilled that she's coming round or a bit daunted that she's rushed us through and doing a home visit! Are they normal home visits? Ami paranoid!?

well thats good, maybe she is coming to see you as you have done loads of her work for her and so easier for her.
15 months is very young so you will properly have a long wait. We got bumped up list as CAMHS had "suggested" from GP referal that DD1 had ASD, so didnt have to bother with CDC went straight to CDAC.
DD2 has been bumped up as she has a sibling with ASD.
Well done for you though
If it helps our SN HV came round spent 5 mins with DD2 said "think she's fine" then stayed for another 30 mins and by end had suggested SALT, specialist NN and specialist pre school
