Reasonable adjustments for school trip

Ok, DS is going on a school trip on the first Friday back at school. It is to a school of another religion where there will be given lunch. It is an all day trip 8-4.30

DS has sensory issues and very picky about food.

They are not allowed to take a packed lunch as it is considered rude based on the other school's religious beliefs.

I don't want DS to miss the trip because of lunch problems and was trying to think of ways around it.

So far I was thinking:

  1. I could go and eat outside with him - school likely to say no as I am not CRB checked
  1. Someone else could eat outside with him - e.g. TA
  1. I could ask school to ask other school what the meal will be and see if he will eat it.

I strongly feel they should be looking at how they can include him just as they would be thinking of that for a child with a food allergy etc

Any other suggestsions, oh great minds!

Is it a Jewish school they are visiting?

No, sikh.

ah. I would phone up the other school yourself tbh - yes DS's school should do it, but it's going to be more aggro I reckon pushing them to do it than sorting it yourself, and as it's an unusual situation, it's not like you are setting a bad precedent.

You may find the Sikh school more aware of the need to accommodate certain requirements, so I'd definitely ask them. It also shows that you are not being separatist, just concerned that it's a positive experience for him.
Is it spices he has a problem with? or textures as well?

on a purely anecdotal level, I have sikh friends who have always been absolutely lovely about DS's fussy eating, making him sandwiches if he wouldn't have the dinner they made.

Thanks. I have only just got him back to satying at school for lunch time. It's smells more than anything else. There are two school dinners he will have and then, the rest of the week, he takes a lunch box with a few nibbles in it.

I think the school would go ballistic if I rang the other school behind their back. It's not in this town - it's a couple of hours drive away - and they're trying to become 'link schools'.

I was going to go to the head after Easter but wanted to make some clear suggestions.

Thanks guys
