Kayleigh-May is 21 months and has complex health problems one being low muscle tone and she is currently waiting for a brain eeg to see if she is having absent episodes and night time siezures..

Two weeks ago she suddenly started being able to stand unaided for 30-40 seconds each time before her legs gave way this was a huge step forward for her as she can only stand and walk aided atm! We did loads of daily practising and praise to encourage her.

Then out of the blue other morning she got up and could no longer do it if we try to get her to let go of anything and stay standing her legs flop and she drops to the floor instantly, if we put her down on her feet and let go she drops instantly her legs giving way it really is as if we have gone back to a mth ago when she couldnt do it.

My friend has said maybe k-m has had a fit in her sleep and it has set her back a bit. We are seeing physio and paed in two weeks so im going to tell them both whats happened but ama wondering could it have been a fit or has she simply forgotten how to do it overnight she was doing so well to

Anybody had experience of this happening to their Lo? x

Can she still stand if you are holding her?

My DS does this sort of thing all the time and we had the same fears but now worry less.

It seems as soon as he masters something (rolling over, pushing up on his elbows, weight bearing) he does it ALL the time. Then he just doesn't do it for what seems like ages. It's almost as if he thinks 'yeah, done that now, will have a little break from it'

With DS it is more likely that the seizures (he has Lennox Gastaut syndrome) or the drugs do affect his abilities but each time the skills have come back as quickly as they went - he doesn't seem to have to re-learn them. He can still do all the things he could - but illness and even his mood also have an effect.

Worrying is awful, isn't it? I would definitely mention it at the appointments - if nothing else, it may hurry up the EEG!

It could be that she just doesn't feel like it at the moment, but it is the EEG you need to tell you if there is any seizure activity affecting her. Make a nuisance of yourself (I do it all the time )

My DS is the same age and so wilfull - there is no making him do anything he doesn't want to.

I hope yours is the same and she'll be back on her feet when she feels like it

she is standing aided still yes her moods are so age approipate tho it untrue behavioural temper tantrums have suddenly kicked in lately argghhh!

I will mention it i just worry over her a lot and cant work out why she has suddenly stopped managing to do something we was making progress with.

I will mention it to genetics team to as they are seeing her 12th April to start testing to see if she has a genetic disorder. thanks for replying xx

Has she been poorly recently? I find illness really affects my dd who has low muscle tone and hypermobility. When she first started to stand/walk we seemed to take one step forward and two steps back (literally)! She is still really weak if she gets ill and she's been walking for over a year now.

Otherwise, could it be a confidence issue if she is still standing aided?

janmumto5 · 01/04/2010 21:02

Nope she not been poorly we actually doing really well health wise since the peg was fitted and ng tube usage stopped!

I do think it is partly confidence as well even tho she was doing really good etc with doing it unaided i feel for her now tho as you can see it in her eyes she wants to join in with the others more x

Hopefully that will encourage her to try again with her walking. My dd just wanted to walk and run around like her older brother and this has brought her on a long way!

Hope she gets her confidence back soon - have you tried the wooden spoon? Getting her to hold one end and letting go when she doesn't notice.

janmumto5 · 03/04/2010 09:40

No Minty i not heard of that before..i would need two tho as she wont stand unless she got support on both hands so to speak and never lets go one handed when holding onto furniture i will try that one today thankyou x

We have now noticed she isnt cruising around furniture either and when we hold her hands to walk she just goes to the floor tryed the wooden spoon thing and she wouldnt stand with them in her hands while i held the wooden spoons from the tops am startin to get quite worried now about it ,its almost as if she has regressed and forgotten how to do it all
