BRITAX Traveller Plus Car Seat - Any comments?

I was wondering if any of you have bought or used a Britax Traveller Plus car seat and would pass on any comments - good or bad - on your experience?

It is the only five point harness car seat suitable for over 18kg ( suits 15kg to 36kg) but it has a hefty price tag so I just wanted some honest user opinions before I buy that model.

(I am posting in special needs not car seats because I think it is a seat more likely to be used by parents with SN DC's ) Thanks in advance!

Hi LittlePushka, I think it depends why you would be buying it. If it is just because you have an escapologist, then others have found a 5-point crelling harness in combination with a normal booster very effective, and would reduce the cost to around £150.

LOL at escapologist children!! Thanks ,lou. I am a little concerned at using an adult belt having recently had a car accident. I subsequently viewed crash tests on line which confirmed my concerns about DS shoulder just slipping out of adult belt on side impact.

I wanted five point harness for as long as possible so as to prevent this.

Right Well in that case you have a couple of options.

  1. Traveller Plus car seat c.£500

OR

  1. A normal high back booster seat, ranging in price from £30 to £200.

PLUS
A Crelling Harness either Model 27 or 28, around £58.

You position the crelling 5-point harness around the car booster seat, and use the 3 point car seat belt over the top.

Traveller plus is effective but not very nice.

Pros:

  • reliable 5-point harness; no good against houdinis but contains wrigglers weel
  • adjustable
  • you can often get charity funding because it is a "proper" SN seat.

Cons

  • heavy, hard to carry
  • large (if you have a split rear seat it may not work with one of these in. And forget ever being able to get 3 kids in the back)
  • poor value: standard of fittings, cover etc. equivalent to a £39.99 mainstream seat.
  • poor fit (imo) - fits poorly in the back of the car and I'm sure that many of them are fitted unsafely as a result.

I'd agree the standard booster/Crelling is a good option, though you may also need a cover for seatbelt release on the standard belt. But phone Crelling first (they are very helpful) and discuss sizes and fitting; their solution doesn't fit all cars.

Thank you both SO much! I'd never heard of the crelling harness...of to check it out on the link you kindly provided lou.

R3dh3d,...very helpful cons points,...especially as our car is often used with the middle seat removed completely to accomodate the dog's travelling box, meaning we'd need the boys' seats to easily fit on only one seat IYSWIM. Really helpful point as I would have just assumed theyd fit.

great stuff!
