DD2 has echolalia, she is 2.5years old and been referred to CDAC, same pead as DD1 is under. Now I know im meant to try and distract her when stimming but im not sure what im meant to do about echolalia? Do I just carry on convo, which is fine is what she says is right for convo but sometimes she'll just start shouting out lines from books peppa pig ect.
We havent had anyone out to us at all, no help here really for dd1, and have called SNHV from other side of county as we dont have one.
Any hints please

we had the "telly talk" as well. My theory is - a small amount to calm down - don't interfere with - but otherwise try and break into the conversation - maybe you say some of the lines or adapt some of the lines so "peppa, george likes muddy puddles", you could say "DD2, george likes muddly puddles, splash".

It reduced as DS's language improved.

oh you poor thing, I really hated it when DS's sentences only came from echolalia, otherwise he was at single word level, I found it heartbreaking at times.

In terms of the non-telly talk echolalia, DS former NHS SALT was quite positive - that it shows a kid wants to respond to you, but isn't sure what to say, so resorts to repeating because of that - so it's a stepping stone.

I would grab all the asd books you can from the library, and see if you can get any practical advice about dealing with echolalia, some of the books have good sections, but it's not worth you buying if they only have a few good pages.

She has good speech tbh, and maks herself understood very well, but as you can imagine it drives dd1 (HFA) crazy and keeps saying "stop copying me" only for DD2 to then spend next 20mins walking around the house saying "stop copying me"!! LOL

Dd2 is doing a lot of echoing at the moment but 6 months ago she was non-verbal (so i am kind of pleased she is talking), we quite often get sentences from the TV (mainly Peppa pig) and she echos her sister who finds it funny.

Yesterday i took dd2 to a cafe/cake shop as a treat, i took her up to the counter and said 'which cake would you like' followed by 'iced bun, muffin, chocolate cake or hot cross bun, dd choose' dd2 then repeats 'what cake you like, ice bun, muffin, chocolate cake or hot cross bun, dd2 choose' , so i choose her a iced bun, we sat down and ate our cakes and then returned to the counter to pay, dd2 runs over to the cakes and says 'dd2 want that one' (pointing at a muffin) (20 minutes too late).

I often get fed up of her repeating choices so i choose for her (only to make the wrong choice causing a melt down).

I try to distract her with something else or change the topic, she seems to do it a lot more when she is tired/before bed where she gives us a run down of what she has seen on tv during the day including adverts and theme tunes.
