apparently!
DS2 who has ASD (amongst other dx) & is in MS school does not meet the criterea for LEA autsim outreach.
The school have requested support from the team that are supposed to support children with autism in ms schools....guess what they say he doesn't qualify for their support.
School have asked why he doesn't qualify given that he has autism & is ion ms school & they have said someone will get back to her.

anon I'd like to offer some support and will come back and shout with you at the unfairness of it all soon, but tbh, right now I'm quite depressed by lots of the threads on here, detail silly, stupid behaviour by these people that are supposed to be helping our children.

Is it some kind of SN full moon?

I would speak to the team yourself and ask why he doesn't fit the criteria. Then speak to IPSEA and find out where you stand. Parents who shout get the most support.

Thanks ladies, Yes I will be on the phone in the morning, in my very calm but very firm voice. I shall use as many sensible words as I can muster when really i want to scream "YOU ARE TALKING OUT OF YOUR ARSE"
The sad thing is the school & his teacher always do their absolute best by him its only when they ask for advice from outside it all becomes hard work.

Hi Anon

I'm not sure who actually funds Autism Outreach - Local Authority or NHS, but whoever does are the people you should complain to.

The fact that he's in MS is irrelevant - in fact he probably needs more support in MS as in a specialist school there is a chance the teachers would know sufficient about autism to provide the correct support -in MS you cannot say that.

Best wishes

The outreach is based at the local sn (mainly autism) special school & is LEA funded, It was actually the area SEN officer that recommended in a review report that the outreach team provide school support & strategies.
The head has been on the phone to the SEN officer.
I bet if we try again after 1st April he will qualify[hmmm]

In some LA's the Autism Outreach is paid for by the school. Funds are delegated based on SEN, and the school get to 'buy in' services.

I think too that this arrangement is complicated by statements in that it is the LA's responsibility to meet the provision mentioned.

So you can get a situation where the teachers want support, but the head refuses to pay for it, and the autism outreach say that the school has already met their responsibility towards the school. Sometimes the whole thing can be sorted by the SEN Officer responsible for the child's needs but as you can see, - it's a blimin mess.

What I describe isn't the approach for all authorities but do check that the school aren't passing the buck and fobbing you off.

It will help you get to the bottom of things if you can ask questions based on the above.

I bet the stalling is about money and who pays for it though!

anonandlikeit · 30/03/2010 22:39

thanks dels, yes I'm sure it's about money, isn't it always!
Its just bloody madness, it's their so called specialist knowledge the school want to utilise but we all ahve to chase our tails to get anywhere.
Apparently initial introductions are not chargeable their service only beomes chargeable when regular hour support are utilised.

It actually infuriates me that as parents we have to even know any of this shit, it should all just happen without us being, accountants, lawyers, teachers & frigging social workers... rant over & breathe 1-2-3...

LOL, Well you can have our Autism Outreach if you like. I just told them to feck off!

anon Are you willing to go in as a voluteer trainer/support? Perhaps if the autism outreach hear of such a hair-brain scheme they will get scared into providing some training. They'll be defensive over their little empire I bet.
