I am a worrier and at a recent parents evening about my Z (5 years) was informed that she was not asking how and why questions although she does given the right structure/questions at home. Also she struggles with writing and holding a pen with the correct grip despite being able to trace the letters and recognise them although she confuses similar looking letters eg b d p q could she be dyslexic /dyspraxic, as there is a family history of both and does not asking questions mean she is not very bright? am I worrying too soon.

purple You're probably not getting many responses because your title says a year old, not 5yr old, which makes you sound like a PFB mummy. I think if you start a new thread with the correct age you'll get more response.

purpledolphin, hi I think at this age it is quite, quite common for children to confuse similar letters, and write letters backwards. Fine motor skills are also just emerging, really.

How would you say she is in general? Does she respond to how/why questions appropriately? How is she socially? How would you say her fine motor skills are generally (scissors, buttons, zips, etc)?

I think that with a family history of dyslexia/dyspraxia, you will always be on the lookout. I have a friend who took her DS to the doctor as a baby because she was concerned about lack of eye contact and had a family history of ASD. He is absolutely fine! On the other hand, I wasn't concerned at all about DD1 as a baby, and it turns out that she has significant SEN/SN, and a brain malformation.

Why don't you make an appointment with her teacher to clarify if they have concerns overall, or whether your DD is in the normal range for her age of ability?
