Is it my understanding that as a parent if I don't want my Ds (asd)to walk a mile there and back to church on Friday I can ask that he stays at school and does some 1-1 with his TA?
We walk to school most days and a 5 minute walk for most takes us 20 mins, there are plenty of distractions along the way too, park, home, walls to climb on, ponds to throw stones in it will take FOREVER.

Am currently waiting for school to get back to me.
Can someone with experience of this please give me some advice

Will he not have a 1:1 for the trip (his TA)?

I let dd2 go on trips out as long as the school/nursery does a risk asessment first and she has a 1:1 with her.

How old is your DS? is he young enough to wear a wrist strap?

I'm sure if you say 'no' to the trip they can't take him against your will.

Yes, he will have 1-1 for the trip.
He is 4 1/2.
I am thinking about the distance as he is crap walker, the sitting, listening, and waiting which he really struggles with.He would just have huge meltdown.
Should I just let them get on with it?

I'm not very confident with them tbh they're not very forthcoming with their procedures about things like this and letting me know how they will deal with situations like this.

God I don't half waffle

Thanks Marne

TBH i would let him go.

I was the same with dd1's first trip/walk with the school, she has Aspergers and mild dyspraxia (very slow walker and had a thing about having to walk in front of people), she walked better for them than she does me, i couldn't manage to walk home from school with her without her crying or refusing to walk.

I was really worried but she was so pleased with herself when i picked her up from school because she managed to keep up with the others (i expect they had to walk slow for her).

I would let him go, my ds2 is normally driven to the church as he physically can't walk far (cp & asd) but as long as his 1 to 1 is with him even things he struggles with & may take longer I still let him go. All part of the education IMHO.

Oh well, the church trip was cancelled due to foul weather and Ds didnt go to school due to bad cold!
Best laid plans...!
