I need to buy ds a harness to stop him getting out of his carseat - any ideas?

Any information is welcome....

My ds is a good passenger. However, he has started to climb out of his carseat by slipping under his seat-belt (he sits on a booster chair and is secured with just the regular strap) - he only does this when the car is stationary but whilst the car is moving, he often sways about or reaches round and grabs the parcel shelf, etc. He is secured by a harness on his school transport. ds hasn't yet attempted to unlock/open the car doors but he is only 7yrs old, so there is still time for him to learn this particular trick...sooo, we need to buy some kind of harness for him for when he is travelling with us.

I've looked at the Crelling Website but was wondering if there are any other manufacturers? ds sits at the back of the car so I don't want to have to mess about in the boot with straps every time I go out with ds in the car.

What are the design options?
Which is the easiest harness to use?
How much do these things cost?

Any experiences, good or bad, would be great! Thanks.

We use a crelling harness with dd1. She's 5.6 and did exactly the same as your ds - slid out from bottom of seatbelt.

We use an adult size (needs to be to fit around high backed booster) harness - sorry can't remeber th part number, but it's a postural one I think (type 28?)

cost about £100 iirc.

It works well and we've not yet had dd1 trying to undo it.

It does fit around the back seat from the boot, but you only need to fiddle around with that bit once. After that all adjustments are made on the shoulder/ waist straps like you would for buggy straps or simialr

I'll look up qhich one we have and post tomorrow (am on iPod so can't link etc

Thanks for your reply.

I need to do some more research and find the best design for ds's needs. It needs to be a harness that can be swapped between cars without much hassle....hopefully such a harness exists cos I don't want to buy more than one!!

We have a Crelling one. It is a bit of a hassle to put in/out of the car but I think that is only because I'm short and the boot is very big so I have to literally climb in! I'm sure it would be fairly easy otherwise, well with a bit of practice anyway.

just quickly, as it's bedtime (althoug dd1 seems to think differently )

I'm not sure any of the harnesses are that easy to swap between cars. we ended up buying 2 for this reason.

Not the answer you wanted, i know, but it wouldn't have worked any other way for us.

Thanks for the replies...I did wonder how user-friendly these harnesses are, having watched the escort fiddling about every day with straps, buckles and goodness knows what. I guess this type of item is difficult to road-test (excuse the pun!) without actually buying one.

It seems that Crelling is the main type but I will search further for any other options.

Just a word if you do go for a crelling (and really tehre's not much else out there)

  1. use their customer service dept; they're excellent and will help you with anything you need to know
  1. some designs come with optional chest strap- buy it, ours was udseless until we added it

Ah, thanks for the info!

I think I will take a closer look at the harness on my ds's school transport and perhaps ask the escort if I can have a go at strapping him in....
