DD is 10 abnd in year 6

we moved house/area/school in Dec and she's had a bit of trouble settling at shocol

more info here

Went into school last night and her teacher said a few of the staff had discussed her in sthe staff room and thought she showed signs of Asperger's. Have asked school senco to get involved to see if we can find out if this is the case

I am woefully uninformed about this TBH and could do with some pointers/advcie

Old school never said anything like this and they knew her VERy well, small school, excellent teacher etc

'Reading your list is helping my sanity which has been severely tested lately. '

That's one of the joys about having an sn forum.
You can wail " Am I going mad? Is it my fault? Are they the only person on the planet who does this?' and get back a resounding 'No!' from many others who recognise the bewilderment and sympathise. My OH has no dx, but ticks most of the boxes. One of the reasons my DS wasn't identified until his AS became a problem was that he fits right into our extended family.

Goblinchild - ex-H's specialist (sadly and expensively private) commented that 'we're all on the spectrum'. It's certainly true in our extended family. I really appreciate having this forum which is far more informative than a) the NHS and b) most of what I've read online and in books. Thank you again.

no no no to set of symptoms or anything suggesting as is mild

OK we know there there is Autism with LD, putting that aside for a minute the research suggests that there is no severity impact difference between HFA and AS. In fact excepting language difficulties that appliesto autism- I suppose what they mean is a child with severe food issues will not necessarily * be less severe because of an AS dx (can link to research if people want). AS dx only means no language delay; many like ds1 have quite significant issues understanding the complexities of language.

The set of symptoms thing- if you visit AS groups you might expect some form of homogenity: not so, behaviours placing someone on the dsm- IV or Triad can be different just on there. For example ds1 is fairly classic in that he won't approach people, is reserved etc. DS3 otoh approiached people randomly and with abandon- both ASD as socially inappropriate but amredely different and indeed if i didnt know the rationale at opposite ends of the scale

  • I think its probably easier to handle if your child has language and no LD though in relaity. Easier does not eman easy obviously. Bloody hard IME of ds1. nd hormones I too have an ex with AS- undiagnosed but clear as day (right down to maths degree from RG Uni and not talking to anyone for days on end, food issues and routines). Incrediblky hard to understand him, then we broke up (not amrried, broke up just before wedding) and I met Dh and had the boys- seems I am an ASD magnet lol
