Does anybody know if children with gdd do actually ever catch up??

I have 3 children with gdd,, my twins are nearly 6 lewis was 2.5yrs when he was diagnosed gdd then he was a yr behind now he is devolpmentally, emotionally, behaviourwise like a 3yr old so his gap has gotten larger not smaller--this worrys me as he also has a abnormality of his brain,

Daniel was d/x at 3 and was rated at dvolpmental age then of 18mths he is now on par with lewis and about 3 yrs in everything his gap hasnt worsened but stayed the same iykwim? no brain scan has been done on Dan as yet im thinking of getting private one done tho.

Kayleigh-May hasnt actually been assessed as such but you can see the delay with her she is 20mths now but devolpmentally she is 12mths so not huge gap the professionals do think she has a genetic disorder as well tho causing her delays..

So my question is has anybodies child actually ever caught up (am sick of the oh they will soon catch up comments), am i right in thinking my kiddies will probaly always need my and my partners support thro out life?

I do worry so much about them and the difference between the twins and their peers is huge now and i am so glad they are aware they are different to their peers. x

Hi Jan,
My 2.7 dd also has gdd. At our request the psychologist did a IQ exam a year ago, and another one last month. The delay has stayed the same, which is good news, because they told me to expect the gap to widen.

They told me, as they much have told you, that the final status will be obtained when she enters kindergarden.

It's funny that the official news of her delay was devastating a year ago, and now the same delay is seen as good news, because it did not widen

I have searched the Net asking the very same question many times, I know how you feel.

Take care

Hi, my DD (4 in July) also has GDD. I think whether they 'catch up' depends on the underlying problem. In DD's case, she looks like she has a chromosone problem (dysmorphic features) but like 50% of children her geneticist sees, there isn't any way to diagnose it as yet. That means they can't really say what she will be able to do.

DD was seen by her paediatrician and a psychologist yesterday and cognitively they think she is functioning at around an emerging 2 year-old level. About a year ago they were saying 15 months, so that's good. She might be developing slowly, but she is developing: just at her own pace.

GDD can mean such different things: DD has poor fine motor skills and is walking and running (albeit a bit awkwardly), speech v delayed..although a good communicator: her friend with GDD speaks well but has behavioural issues and can't walk.

my son had GDD he is 15 now and has the learning ability of a 9-10 year old.
Was always fobbed off when he was younger all we ever got was he'll be fine by the time he starts school we always knew he wouldn't be.

Thanks for the replies..

Arabica im seeing genetics 12th april for kayleigh-May she has so many other health issues that our paed thinks she definately has a genetic disorder he has mentioned chromosone 22q deletion but im 90%sure she already been tested for that last January as routine testing when she first started being ill.

I have searched and searched the net but cant find anything not even a forum dedicated to gdd parents..

Borderslass thats interesting to know does your son have any other underlying problems ie brain abnormalities etc?

I wonder what the plan of action available will be for our children as they get to 16/18 etc..

My twins both walk, run fine..daniel can ride 2wheeler bike lewis cant ,lewis also holds his arms up as he runs and as he walks ..

Both have moderate speech and language problems and both have understanding of 2 maybe 3 keywords a time 3 being generous.

Behaviourwise they are terrible at home but great in school..daniel that bad we dont take him out unless he on a crelling harness as he doesnt think twice about running into the road or trying to jump of the bus or train at every stop he also likes licking windows and getting as much attention as possible from strangers.

I don't know. DD1 (4.3) has GDD with a 'spiky' profile - good colour knowledge, can count, recognise shapes, quite verbal. Poor fine motor skills, gross motor skills (has blue badge), behaviour very much 2 year old.

She has a severe S&L delay/disorder, which had widened by 6 months in the intervening year between assessments and severe attention/concentration difficulties. She will go to Special School in September.

I see a widening vocabulary, etc. But no real change - every time DD1 develops a little (like being able to do a little jump off the floor with both feet with great effort, clearing only mm in height), we see that her peers have raced on by (like skipping into preschool).
