Hi my son has been seen by 2 different paeditricians 1)who wantd him assessed straight away aswe had problems with his sleep for years and the second one who said he had autistic traits but didnt feel it was beneficial to be tested at this stage.
My son goes to nursery and as they have no problems with him then the social worker is saying there isnt enough evidence to assess him despite us at breaking point over his sleep and behaviour and obsessions. Can they refuse to have him assessed even if 2 paeditricians have said there is something there?

What assessment are you wanting the SW to do? Is it to get respite or home help ?
I'm not quite getting the conection between the assesment mentioned by your paed and the refusal to assess by a SW. Sorry, maybe i'm just having a blonde moment...lol no offense to blondes of course!

Go back to the paed and ask to be referred to CAMHS.

For my son to be assesed for autism. As we moved area the first paeditraician cant refer us its got to be one in our area. The second paeditrican said he didnt think it wold be beneficial to havehim tested at this time (i was so angry when i read his letter as we have been begging for help for over a year and its not him up very night with him)

I see. I wasn't aware that SW could make decisions such as this re:asd assessment.

I would ask your gp to refer you to a different paed, a developmental paed would be better than a community one. You are entitled to see someone else.
Depending where you live, an eventual referal to Cahms or CDC to get your DS assessed is what you need.
Good luck.

thanks for your advice im going back to the gp then i didnt know you could ask for another paeditician

Hi. Just read your post. S Workers have nothing to do with ASD assessment. Go to your GP and insist he refers you either to a Developmental Paed. or to CAMHS-both can do ASD assessment.
You could ask your Paed. fro your previous area to send his findings re your ds to your GP,for him to send with new referral-it may speed up the process a little.
Be honest with your GP re the stress you are under-say how long you have been struggling with your ds.
When my ds was young and waiting to be seen by CAMHS our GP prescribed something to help his sleep,(not Melatonin-GPs cant prescribe this), this may help-but make sure you read side effects, as some medicines can cause hyper activity!
If you decide you need respite, a S Worker can help-they must do a Needs Assessment on your ds and the rest of your family-they cannot refuse to do this. HTH.
