DS (possibleAS) getting funny about cleanliness/getting sick

How can I discourage this or stop it getting worse?
DS is 4.5 yo, he most likely has AS (being assessed). He has started a new thing where he gags and worries about being sick if he can see something he doesnt like, food wise.
After dinner he stresses and gets upset if I dont wipe the table down straight away before he has his yoghurt/fruit. He wont eat his yoghurt if there is still bits of food/crumbs on the table, says it makes him sick.
Also for example if he finishes breakfast and leaves one or two bits of cereal still in the bowl, I have to empty the bowl and rinse it out straight away. If I just take it off the table and move to beside the sink to sort out later he cries as it makes him feel sick that he knows its still there.
At the moment I am doing it so hes not stressed but also calmly telling him that its fine and cant make him sick etc.
What should I be doing??

HI felix

I'm not sure, but are your ds's behaviours coping strategies? Could he help clean up with a special cloth in his favourite colour,or bring his own bowl in? or alternatively somehow do a visual story that lets him know that everything is clean and everything is ok. Alternatively if he's managing and you are managing just go with it?

Thanks. He wouldnt help me clear it up as he would never touch it, he would freak out at that!!
I dont mind doing it really if it keeps him happy, but I dont want to be encouraging him or making it worse by doing it and creating a routine/habit around it iyswim

I think you need specialist advice. Has he been referred to CAMHS?

Fel1x · 16/03/2010 16:40

no, i dont think they have that in my area.
he sees a paed every 6 months or so. at his last paed appt (nov) she said she is sure he has Aspergers (although says it would be diagnosed as mild ASD as they dont seperate out AS any more) and she organised a multi disciplinary assessment which will be this summer before he starts school for an official diagnosis.
he didnt have this worry in nov when we saw paed so didnt discuss it. he did have a stress throat clearing noise back then that he had for a long long time but that has stopped now.. perhaps this is his new 'phase'?

Maybe. You could always write to the paed and explain that his behaviour has changed in the way described and that you would appreciate advice as to the best way to deal with it. Is he at school? Is he doing the same things there regarding food?

Fel1x · 16/03/2010 19:31

yes thats a good idea to write. theres a sn health visitor at the centre he goes to and i have her phone number so might phone her and ask.
ds doesnt go to school yet till september. he does go to pre school but not over lunch time so he doesnt act the same way there

best to get some specialist advice in place before he starts school so that they know how to deal with it as well.
