if today hasnt been an eye opener I dont know into how low functioning ds really is

Ds drank a bottle of room freshner at my brother's house today ....not only did he not say what he did but then said he did drink it....but as no one saw it ..don't know if he did. It was only several hours later when brother's DP noticed the bottle was empty.

A&E said it was highly toxic substance but after 4hrs of obs felt ds ok to come home thankfully.

I dont think ds drank it...but ds unable to say what did/done/recall and says 'yes' to everything....it has really made me realise how much support is needed for safety and language.

Although a blessing ds is going to be fine, maybe a warning of what ds needs in terms of future support this has shaken me up and opened my eyes more to what ds really needs in terms of support!

Poor you. A & E is never fun.

Phoenix4725 · 15/03/2010 04:49

Sorry it's rough when they can't say

TotalChaos · 15/03/2010 07:57

you poor thing, it's so difficult when you can't get a reliable answer from them.

lou031205 · 15/03/2010 09:41

colabottles So hard.

colabottles · 15/03/2010 10:39

Thanks for support...ds bright as button thankfully now

When things like this happen it's really is frightening and makes a parent aware of difficulties their is! Not being able to tell me if toxic substance was drunk or not hasn't been taught intensively in ABA so if it aint been taught ds cant do it iygwim.

Ds recall and memory (short term ) really bad. But ds has not one once of danger awareness. Difficult on own as need to be with ds every second...left my mum with ds for 45 mins whilst I popped home to get gfcf food....can't leave ds with family as it only takes that one thing ds drank bleach when 2yrs old and had a few close calls with choking putting objects in his mouth all the time....OT have done nothing for ds as their answer is ABA will sort it! I am really going to kick up a fuss now over no OT for 2 yrs terrible it has to be untill a life threatening situation until I can say ...ds needs SI etc as up till now none at all sorry tired stressed and waffling..

Ugh. Glad he's Ok, after all that.

My two terrify me constantly. Everything (except healthy food) goes into DS2's mouth. DS1 is scary in a different way. In the past few months he has broken a glass partition and almost sprayed oxyclean in his face (he grabbed the bottle of me and tried to squeeze the trigger - I had to slap his hand to make him drop it, since I didn't want to make him squeeze any harder.) DS2 poured hot (thankfully not boiling) coffee on himself, last Spring because we let our own concentration lapse for just a few seconds.

pokhara · 15/03/2010 14:54

how about when they put your lipstick and blusher cream all over their faces, i know its not half as bad as the bleach ect but it costs at lot of money, lol x

ouryve · 15/03/2010 16:57

DS1 tried to moisturise his chapped face cheeks with a tube of germoloids, the other week. That could have been interesting!

colabottles · 15/03/2010 17:58

totally shattered this eve....watching ds like hawk as his latest chewy is electric wires

Ouryve ds done the spray in face also (deodriant) ...lucky the bleach didnt go in his eyes as was holding bottle over head watching the bleach spill out of the lovely pink fruit shoot type shape. He's got hold of vasaline in past and cant have soap gel etc ds doesnt eat veg either!

Tried to do social stories with ds today about the dangers but just laughing not a clue oh boy it's bloody hard!

Ok, so...drank a whole bottle of cough medecine (thank god it was her then baby brother's medecine so not very medicated, but we still had to call the local poison centre to check it was all OK...who gave us the third degree about letting our child get hold of it). Did sort out her constipation, though!
Will quietly remove every biscuit from a packet over a space of hours...if you are stupid enough to leave it in her reach.
Will put anything in her mouth, including broken glass, beer bottle tops, wheels off her brother's toy cars...
Will pour whole bottles of coloured shampoo down the sink in order to make pretty patterns, or very bubbly water, and will use an entire bottle of my expensive birthday present hand cream to make little handprints all over the bathroom mirror (thankfully has recently learnt that water handprints is OK, soap or cream handprints is not).
Will spill a bag of flour on the kitchen floor, sit in it and say "Oh my goodness, look at this mess!!" (Echolalia, think it's from Balamory). Actually, that one really made me laugh as she was having such a fun time.
It's like having a permanent toddler. And she's not even very severe!! Just a slightly warped sense of fun, sometimes.

colabottles · 16/03/2010 13:45

lol...ds says 'look at this mess' when he has put everything from the living room into the second shelf of the dolls house...his is from Sud on Bob builder game on Cbeebies

Oh blimey that sounds awful.. I know how horrible it is to be scarily reminded of how vulnerable they are when you're not watching..
Our dd tries to eat allsorts.. She loves to get hold of sand and mud and cat food and ate cat litter on Christmas day at Grandparents house- so disgusting..
She is getting tall enough to grab stuff that was til recently out of her reach and tipped over content of sugar bowl onto kitchen floor and sat in it scooping and eating. She has also stuffed tissues and nappywipes in her mouth. I get so exhausted following her round watching her and nagging her brother and dad not to leave stuff out but it's so hard.. I feel for you and thank goodness you little one seems ok..

My ds has swallowed a ball bearing once, oh and his hearing aid battery! That was an interesting Friday night in Casualty!!
