to do Ketostix urine tests on dd2.

How on earth do I do it?

She's in nappies and has NO idea when she's about to wee.

I don't hae a potty.

Erm...

I know when we did it for ds3 (out of nappies now but he qas IIRC 5?) we were told to wring the nappy to get it

meltedmarsbars · 10/03/2010 12:13

eek! I was thinking that was what I'd have to do.

Oh the joys!

When dd2 needed a urine test in hospital when she was small they had a tape on bag contraption. She screamed the whole time it was on, wringing out a nappy woul have been better!

meltedmarsbars · 10/03/2010 12:21

We've had those bags at hosp too - this is to do every couple of days at home.

We used the Newcastle urine collection set for dd1 when we had to get samples pre-toilet training (NO idea how we'd do it now - don't think she'd take kindly to us interfering with her toileting!)

It's basically an old style sanpro pad, filled with just plain cotton wool like stuff (very technical, me!) so no chemicals to alter the results of the test. pop in inside the nappy (ideally they say put nappy on inside out so that you can guarantee chem free, but that does also guarantee a mess!)

then once job done, you either wring out the pad, or use a syring to suck up the wee and squirt into container.

hospital wards/GP should eb able to give you the set, or I did have a link, hold on will have a look and get back to you

feelingbetter · 10/03/2010 12:55

If its a dip test, can you put some cotton wool in? Then, when its wet put it in a big syringe and squeeze out the urine into an egg cup or something to dip?

It's what we do but have no idea (yet!) about ketostix

Agree with the bag thing (called a u-bag) and the Newcastle pad jobbie. The bag is a devil to stick on them though and obviously designed for babies only, in size terms. Hospitals used to have them a lot a few years ago, but I get the impression they're out of favour atm because they so often need a "clean catch" for a wee sample (though obv you don't) and they tend to give contaminated samples.

How is she with sitting on the loo, plied with fluids? Could you put the loo seat up, line the inside loosely (I mean about six inches below seat level) with cling film, put the seat back down and stick her on that?

sneezecake · 10/03/2010 14:02

we had to do the cotton wool thing as explained above, when ds was in hospital and they needed to dip his urine

meltedmarsbars · 10/03/2010 15:35

r3dh3d: She can't sit on a loo - she'd fall in, plus she is too heavy for me to manhandle onto the loo.
And she's tube-fed, nil by mouth so the fluid intake is pre-set.

I might try the cotton wool thing and put the whole wet cotton wool ball in a 60ml syringe as feelingbetter suggests!

Thank you for all your suggestions! Think of me, as I get wee everywhere but where it needs to be, over the next few weeks....

Good luck with it! My SIL needs things like this done, but she can be sat on a potty chair thing.
