DS1 is having tricky times. He is falling a lot again, and yesterday fell on a concrete step and has really hurt his gum/ knocked a front tooth out of place and I think staved a finger. Dentist tomorrow, which I am worried about.
He's falling over a lot at the moment, and I don't know if it's part of his "thing" or not, but it's probably sensory, anyway, he doesn't put his hands out when he falls, so it is always face first.
He's also doing an awful lot of squealing/ groaning instead of speaking which I find really difficult to deal with. And lots and lots of temper tantrums
And I am tired to the point of screaming of people thinking he is being bad.
I feel like Evil Mummy because I have put him in his own room (because he was wrecking the room he shared with his sister) with 5 books and one teddy, and told him he has to stay in bed, I don't care if he doesn't feel tired. He's been there 2 hours already and is just lying there looking sad. Which is in some ways better than wrecking the place, but in other ways, .
Nursery have spoken to me again about the fact that he is very passive and that he doesn't react to pain in a "normal" way (ie, with the fall where he mashed his mouth up yesterday, he cried for a couple of minutes but then went silent.)

Sorry for long old rant, just need to get it out there in a non-judgey place.

Oh bless him and you. Do you have a hv that works with you to help?

BigWeeHag · 08/03/2010 21:53

To be honest, I haven't seen anyone but the SALT since his provisional diagnosis 6 weeks ago. I don't want anyone to think I can't cope, and also, HV advice tends towards the reward chart, which Does Not Work!

I have started a visual schedule for mornings and evenings which has made a real difference. I am stuck now!

Just wanted to say it sounds like a really bad time, and I feel for you. Does he get any support in nursery? Do you get any support? Tantrums and groaning, not sleeping and wrecking the place are all so hugely stressful. Really good luck for the dentist tomorrow, and hope he sleeps soon.

ouryve · 08/03/2010 23:05

You've every reason to feel stressed.

And you're not being evil, putting him in his own room. A low stimulation environment might just be the best thing for him in some circumstances. He's had a tiring day or so, even if sleep isn't likely any time soon.

ouryve · 09/03/2010 11:19

How are you both today, BigWeeHag?

BigWeeHag · 09/03/2010 20:27

We are OK, thanks. Dentist was tricky to get to, but OK once we were there - I got a taxi so as not to have to drag him there! He did "startled rabbit" in the dentist - floppy and passive, eyes closed. HCP tend to interpret this as good behaviour, rather than noticing the terror induced paralysis!

SALT was great he's making fab progress.

And I bumped in to the HV, who asked if I was OK. So she got quite a loud NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. And she's coming out on Friday, she was quite surprised that we've had no follow up since verbal DX.

Anyway, feeling a bit better. He managed not to fall over today, although he did fall asleep on the buggy board and fell off that!

Hi BIgweeHag,
Glad you got on ok at the dentist. Startled rabbit is preferable to "get me out of here now!"
Thats good SALT was success and you are right to get HV over. Do you have input from any other professionals?

PS do you still have zapp bag for sale?

ouryve · 09/03/2010 22:39

Awww, bless him!

I must confess, startled rabbit is my favourite response, sometimes. It's easier for everyone than yelling, kicking and wriggling!

Hope good things come of the HV visit.

BigWeeHag · 10/03/2010 08:26

Waitingforgodot, I do indeed still have it, email me, jemimatroll at hotmail dot com.

We are waiting for the OT to come through, he was top of the list 2 weeks ago. Also waiting for Ed Psych and "proper" diagnosis.

ouryve, yes, startled rabbit is much, much easier - last time he was in A&E with a concussion they kept shining a light in his eyes (I know they have to) and he was absolutely dreadful. Mind you, the doctor was a proper wally - "Now, DS1, if you don't behave, I'll have to fetch the consultant!" Yes, that'll work! lol.

Um, yeah, I bet your DS cared about that threat as much as either of mine would.
