Nappies at School

Hi,

My son is 5 has GDD and "Complex Needs". He attends a school which is mainstream with a Special Needs Unit. I have his statement review and multi prof meeting next week. There are a few things I need to raise re School however one of them is the fact that often 2-3 times a week he comes home with the same nappy on that he went to school in. If he does get changed it is only once through the day. The school is trying to get him used to the toilet on the advice of a toileting team, but the school has said that they are not seeing results. Therefore he is not going to wee or the other on the toilet so his nappies are wet and need changing (often comes home so wet it is falling down). Any ideas on the best way to raise this in meeting.

Ta

I would ask how the toileting is going then I would go on then ,after a response, go on to tell them about how his nappy is often wet after he comes home and talk about it like that.

I a sure that someone will have more advice than me, one thing we are doing with a child in the year 1 class I am in is although he is still in nappies we are slowly trying to get towards making him toilet trianed by simply at this stage when he goes to the toilet(he has is own disabled toilet) we put him on the toilet for a few minuets.

PS he is changed about 4 or 5 times a day.

In my ds's old school his ta would change his nappy at lunchtime, i had a bag in the first aid room stored with a pack of nappies etc, they just let me know when anything is running low, seriously if your not happy you need to say something, and come up with this sort of arrangement. Does he have a ta? And statemented?

Yes he does have a TA and a statement in which it says about his toileting, and I put 3 or 4 nappies in his school bag each day with a pack of wet wipes. His is to be put on the toilet several times a day to get him used to the idea which we have been doing for 4 months plus. The problem is also that he will not say when wet or dirty and will leave it until his nappy cannot take any more. I have tried asking the school how the toliet training is going but they just said he is not "getting it". But I will have to raise the nappies thing specifically as it is not good for his to be soaking wet when coming home. Just how to put it without getting school on defensive!

Just explain your concerns in a calm way, maybe you should do it with the ta, or someone you feel comfortable with. My ds is 7 and i really do know how this feels, it is hard, as i would love for him to be out of nappies. Do you know process they use to get him to use the toilet like visual aids etc. And btw i also have to keep checking his nappy as he doesnt usually tell me either.
