Why are they always locked ? im trying to potty train dd4 now and its a nightmare.... have applied for a radar key , but not all disabled toilets are radar ones .
whats the point of having them if you have to find someone to open them.... not good when you have an gdd/asd child who needs to go ! .

because if they arn't locked they will be wrecked/used by mumsies

drloves8 · 05/03/2010 22:57

i know , still makes you wonder whats wrong with the NTs ?, that they have to ruin them and make life even harder for SN and carers.
suppose it will be the of all the benefits and blue badges then ?

fyi radar keys can be bought off ebay for very little

2shoes · 05/03/2010 23:10

or get one through the proper channels(mine cost £5(say mine but mean dd's as I don't use it)

drloves8 · 05/03/2010 23:23

im going through proper channels for the key for dd4.
why would someone sell them on ebay? ffs ! .if they are no longer needed shouldnt they be returned to the radar people.

I hate it when they are locked. The one in Fenwick is usually locked, and the desk it is kept at is usually vacant, so takes at least 10 minutes to get DS2 into there before he pees himself. Usually I'd use the ladies with him, but they have those Dyson hand dryers in there and he is terrified of them.

Might apply for a radar key myself as still having problems with hand dryers. He used to be fine with them but has reverted back. The only ones he is ok with now are those oldie ones where you press the big silver knob.

I have several Radar keys, one I carry round, one goes in DS's bag and a spare. Once your DC gets a bit older, especially if they're a boy, disabled toilets are by far the most suitable. Taking a teenage boy to the ladies can be done but its very odd and I wouldn't let him go to the gents alone. I know where the best local Radar toilets are but the McDonalds we go to has the disabled toilet padlocked! At least the place is small and I can usually get someone to open it quite quickly but you do wonder why on earth they have to padlock it ffs.

perhaps mcd's have got wise to the fact that the norms love them

( I remember a hig profile mn er bragging about having a radar key)

Pixel · 06/03/2010 23:41

I ought to get some spares really. I usually end up taking ds in the ladies just because I've left the key in my other bag but he's really too big for it now and we do get funny looks.
Our council gives them out free with proof of disability (think I had to get our GP to sign the form) but you have to pay £6 for a replacement if you lose it. I didn't realise when I got the key that I could buy them elsewhere so I needn't have gone through all that malarky!
