Why does everyone think a child with ADHD is VIOLENT or gets ANGRY all the time?

I am fed up of the stereotypical image that is portrayed on TV etc.

This means that our ADHD kids don't get invited to parties.

Also, people don't BELIEVE the child has ADHD IF they don't behave in the media driven ADHD way...which means, at school, they don't get the help they need...whereas, if they were VIOLENT/ANGRY/DISRUPTIVE ... they would.

I often get the comment 'He is a very loving boy'(in very surprised tones!) in regards to DS who has ASD but loves cuddles and close personal contact (but on his terms). Everyone believed the stereotype that ASD children must hate being touched and not be loving children.

Duchess - your GP sounds as useless as mine!

my ds2 has intense eye contact... someone said once "shouldn't he have no eye contact to be autistic"

Grrrr

RE: the two above, we have this frequently. ... what a lot of s**t!!
I so hate these stereotyped ideas about asd.

I had one actually today, by EP...'all autistic children do not communicate because they cannot see the purpose in communication,... and as your DS can engage and communicate with adults he probably hasn't got asd!!!' err... sorry i don't agree.

Well, my ds is 7 and has asd/adhd, and can be aggressive and unpredictable, he gets very angry and finds it difficult to control his emotions. So it is not good to generalise either way. But he is not angry and aggressive due to being naughty or because he feels like it, it is a reaction to his environment, and he gets to the point where he can no longer cope with sensory overload.

My 3 year old has asd and has the intense eye-contact thing. He always has to be touching everything around him, and doesn't really care whether it is an object or a person, or whether the person is a complete stranger or not. Certainly causes some reactions..

Yep, my ds2 is asd/adhd and I am also fed up with how the media has portrayed adhd to be about being an unruly, violent, unmanageable child and that asd children can't be cuddly. Urrggg! DS2 is cuddly and his eye contact is pretty good but he is still asd and adhd. He can also be aggressive and impulsive due to sensory overload but will also wrap a blanket round me if I am tired or unwell x
