I Went and did it!

I finally plucked up the courage to tell DS2's headteacher that I am withdrawing him from the school next year to teach him at home for a year. Already, a review meeting has been brought forward and I am anticipating a lot of slightly defensive talk.

It feels as though its going to be like one of those break-ups where I say "It's not you, it's me" and they say "tell me what you want me to do to make it better" (when all the time I have totally gone off them).

DS2 is nine BTW, and is somewhere unspecified on the spectrum.

Sorry, went off to make tea. I do feel good actually, helped by the traditional MN glass of wine, ready to don my anti-patronisation armour!
Thanks for your replies.

Oh dear - they won't like that as they'll lose their funding for him.

Best wishes and I hope your attempt at HE goes well.

re loss of funding. Is it possible that they will suddenly start working harder on a plan to meet little wiggly's needs?

(it's reminding me of when I told my bank I was leaving them and suddenly there was a free overdraft@)

They will never be able to offer him what i can give him, ie. 1 to 1 with someone on his wavelength.

Re. working on a plan: the headteacher and the Deputy (who was also the senco)both left at half term due to promotion, don't have a clue who is going to replace them (or when) and the teacher DS is likely to get next year is a dragon prone to sarcasm. Our local authority is also having to make big cuts next year.

DS deserves a break too, he has tried really hard but is now getting frustrated at his slow progress.

I am a creative person who believes that if something isn't working out try a different angle (the school seems to believe in try more of the same).

Eight children from DS's class are leaving to go to the local private school next year (including two boys he really likes), so the loss of his funding will not show up too much!
