we took very bright dd to the gp with various issues including zero friends, inappropriate communication with adults, diet and anxiety issues, "compulsive reading" etc. Were referred to pead's registrar who said ?Asp; ed psyc who said "needs consistant with comm disorder; SALT who said "communication problems" adn then back to pead consultant who said that he could "categorically state that she did not have any ASD based on all the reports". I asked about the ed psycs comments - he said that he didn't have her report and then "found it" in the file and then started to go on about people wanting funding from the LA (we don't). I asked about the anxiety - he said that this wasn't mentioned in any report - I pointed out that it was in the first paragraph of his registrar's report. He then asked me to leave and said that he had given his (lack of) diagnosis based on the reports and would send me his report later. I asked how he could have done so when he clearly hadn't read the reports and he just kept repeating that I had to go now as my time was up. I now don't know what to do as dd still has all th eoriginal issues but the school are just saying that she needs to "learn" how to interact properly and that "she must stop focusing on irrelevant details and learn how to see the bigger picture" and that she must "learn how to be organised/make friends/show respect to teachers" etc etc.

You are entitled to a second opinion! Obviously that Paed is an ass! Go back to your GP and ask to be referred elsewhere..it IS your right.
We did this when the first Paed our son saw, was a complete jerk.. was referred elsewhere and thankfully had a much better experience!

I'm sorry he was so utterly useless.

I'd also be inclined to write a letter of contempt..1) for not having read the reports 2) for making assumptions that you wanted funding... it's not his job to diagnose or not based on anyone's budget!!

thank you - I will ask for a second opinion. I'm just afraid that they will all "close ranks" and that we will not be able to get a true second opinion because one pead will not want to contradict another

What is an ICAN? I tried ringing the national autistic society helpline to try to get some numbers and idea of cost but there was no answer. The hospital have said that we can request a second opinion - I just feel that (a) it seems so unfair and inappropriate that he had somehow made a desision without reading the reports and (b) if dd does not have Asp then what do I do about the anxiety, the eating issues, the lack of friends, the problems with school - the teacher's report says that dd "spoils" relationships with adults by making inappropriate comments and that dd cannot relate to her peers so who can dd relate to? I know that a diagnosie will not solve anything but feel that (a) it would at least stop her getting told off at school adn maybe make teachers more understanding and (b) it may make th egp more symphathetic (ie believe us) about the anxiety and food issues. At the momen twe are just bein gtold that it is a parenting thing.
