rude old lay on the bus

ds is 3.11 old, severe language delay, behaviour problems and sensory issues, expecially on the bus!. So he is in his major buggy, safest place for him on the bus and keeps him in one place, today the journey was going well ( usually a complete nightmare). ds keeps asking to ring the bell kepp telling him not yet not time to get off, he is getting more exited and fed up of being on the bus as usual. The bus stops at a bus stop for an oldish lady say in 70's to get on, ds presses the button, bearing in mind the bus had already stopped and doors where open. Bus driver calls back did anyone want to get off, i told him no sorry my son pressed button by accident, he said back, well tell him dont press the button unless he wants to get off. let that one go, not much harm done there, anyway the old lady sits behind me and ds, and says you should learn to control him, he should know not o press the button, well that was it, i turned round and said loudly so everyone on the bus could hear "excuse me do you moind not being so rude, my son has learning difficulties and didnt cause any harm, so please dont be rude to us" she answered " so what i have epilepsy and i know not topress the button im well behaved" turned back to her again and said " please stop being so rude how can you compare epilepsy to a 3 year old with learning difficulties. you are a very rude lady"
she got off at the next stop, people were walking past me on the bus patting me on the back.

i mean what a stupid lady and how rude hey

The ignorance of some people is astounding. She had no right to criticise your parenting skills in the first place, none of her business and no harm done, but to follow up with a comment like that

I'm so glad you had support from people on the bus, too

meltedmarsbars · 26/02/2010 15:30

Well done you!

Well done, you are a lot braver than me, i tend to hide and keep my mouth shut, i wish i was brave enough to say something to people.

claig · 26/02/2010 16:57

She maybe has epilepsy and know not press the button but she hasn't learned how to be polite yet!!
That's awful how some people can be so bloody rude.
Well done for putting her back in her place!

5inthebed · 26/02/2010 17:20

I would have burst into tears with the people patting me on the back on the way off.

Well done for sticking up for your DS.

pokhara · 26/02/2010 17:33

i would normally have burdst into tears too when someone apts you on the back, but this week im a hardened cow after all the hassle with his head teacher, prob be a wimp again next week, but maybe not, i didnt realise that there was so many people rude towards sn, shame on them. but there is tice as many nice people

I think everybody on the bus was with you, but everybody is too embarassed to cause a scene, so they remain silent. Good for you having the courage to tell her where to go

CardyMow · 26/02/2010 21:06

Pokhara, you have just earned your SN mum rhino skin. I didn't get mine until DD was almost 8yo, despite her SN being there at birth.

Mouseface · 26/02/2010 22:09

Ah, the joys of being old.......... I can't wait to sit in my own piss, wearing thick support tights, even in summer, shouting at children on buses for being excited about pressing the stop button because I was NEVER young....... NOT!! How very rude, if you or I did that, we'd be arrested for verbal abuse.

Well done for standing your ground

cyberseraphim · 27/02/2010 09:48

There are a lot of nice people out there. Sometimes the general public get a bad press about SN and it's not always fair or true. It's more shocking when a paid professional says something daft. Button pressing is totally normal, DS2 (NT) is a compulsive button presser. He pressed the emergency stop on our local train once - luckily the driver thought it was funny !

thederkinsdame · 27/02/2010 21:19

Well done - I think you coped really well. People can be so bloody rude. It's a pity we can't spray intoloerant folk with with the permanent dye they use for bank robbers - then all of us would know who they were LOL

waitingforgodot · 28/02/2010 16:58

good for you! Cheeky woman needs put in her place.

BuzzingNoise · 28/02/2010 17:08

What a horrid lady. He pressed the button, it's hardly a crime.

lagaanisace · 28/02/2010 22:18

REminds me of when I was buying size 6 nappies for my 4 year old about six months ago and someone randomly came up and told me I should train him.

Wish I'd been more assertive!
