Should I complain?

DD is very happy at nursery and the staff seem great..BUT

Every day she is getting soaked to the skin including her socks, at least TWICE, and I am having to take bags of clothes to and from nursery.

This is because they have a water table just full of water all the time and she keeps splashing in it.

Nursery have admitted they are struggling with her and in fact she has been assessed this week for more 1:1 (at the moment she only gets 5/12.5 hours and she needs the full 12.5).

However I still feel this is not acceptable.

Not sure whether to bring it up with Head Teacher or not.

Her expensive shoes were ruined today as they got so wet, I did complain about that as they are supposed to put wellies on when they go outside, and I suspect they just didn't bother, but i was told that they got wet at the water table (to the inner soles)??!

My life is hard enough at the moment without having to take clothes back and forward and do extra washing.

Also the nursery nurse overbalanced today when changing DD (they have to change her so often) and DD hurt her back.

I think I'll probably wait and see if she is given more support and if things then improve..

yes, bring it up with headteacher re:water table, 1-1/other staff should be supervising her better so she doesn't get deluged and also I suspect subtly redirect her so she's not spending disproportionate amounts of time at the water table. the nursery nurse incident sounds unfortunate but an unfortunate accident, I'ld be more concerned (unless it's happened before) about the wet play issue.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 25/02/2010 14:37

Yes I am not going to complain about the accident, it just all was a bit much today, with the mountains of washing and the ruined shoes. Will talk to the Head tomorrow I think.

I had a few grrr...moments with my DS's nursery. One when i tried potty training him, he couldn't tell he wanted the potty and you'd have to watch him to get the clue it wanted to go, and time and time again he'd pick him up and he'd wet himself thoroughly as they never took him to the toilet. Same thing with his coat, as soon as a bit of sunshine is out even if it's freezing tehy open the door to the garden and don't check who goes in and out or check they have their coat on, DS doesn't remember to put his coat on , so i'd turn up and he'd be at the water table outside without his coat, his face and hands blue and frozen and his clothes soaked. I did moan a couple of times and now they are more careful.

The fact is SN or not, they are supposed to be watching our dc. So when it's obvious they are not...moan and complain!!!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 25/02/2010 14:45

They have been looking sheepish for weeks when she has got wet and I haven't said anything, they could see I was annoyed today and I complained about her shoes so I hope that will galvanise them a bit.

It takes a LOT to make me complain (although I moan on here) so I think they feel lucky I haven't already.

Hmmmmm, surely having access to a water table the whole time is a huge H&S issue? Is your DD left to play with it on her own sometimes? Is that how she's getting soaked? Poor little thing and poor you having to supply endless dry clothes. You should definately complain. How can she concentrate on anything else if she's wet and cold the whole time? Or having to have time out to get changed, it's not healthy either as I bet she's not changed as soon as she gets wet. And as for the shoes - I'd be livid!!

Oh to be a fly on the wall some days........

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 25/02/2010 14:49

I don't think they leave her on her own with it but she is VERY fast and they just leave her wandering around and she goes over there. She really does need supervised the whole time.

At least the support coordinator was there today so hopefully witnessed this soaking and will provide more support.

I'd half think they just let her get soaked today as the woman was watching but it was yesterday and day before too!!

Well, I didn't have to say anything.

As soon as I went in today the Head Teacher came over and asked if her shoes were OK. When i said they weren't she was very apologectic, and said sorry, that's not acceptable, and it's not acceptable she is getting so wet.

She said they are supervising her but she is just pouring the water everywhere. So she said it's a learning process and she has just started so now they will sort something out.

I think she had waterproof trousers on today as only her top half is wet, we are going to investigate all in one waterproofs at weekend.

She was really nice about it, which was great!

For anyone who read my other thread the woman I talked about at nursery is also being very friendly now to me and DD. Either she is a mumsnetter (I hope not) or I think the penny has dropped about DD!!

That's great news re the HT! Nice to hear that she has taken the situation seriously. What a relief for you, well done. Waterproof all in one is a great idea, can she wear her wellies too? Or some sort of plastic shoe?

Re the other mum....... I hope she keeps it up and makes your life there a little easier

TotalChaos · 26/02/2010 12:53

oh good, glad that HT has realised off her own bat that there's an issue with water play.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 26/02/2010 13:30

they are not keen for her to wear her wellies in case she slips but not having much luck finding anything else! She has got black patent Doc Marten type boots which she was wearing today, which will do for now (and look quite funky!)

What about Crocs? With no socks ?

Marne · 26/02/2010 13:52

Dd2 often comes home wet, either from the water table or the empty sand pit outside (which fills with water when it rains), she then gets upset if she needs changing in the middle of playing so they often leave her until i pick her up, dd2 is then wet until we get home (a 20 minute drive). Her other nursery (MS) seems to keep her dry (ish) and they will change her if she's wet (i send in plenty of clothes and wellies for outside).

We get through a lot of shoes (mostly clarks which cost a fortune).

This week she has given up with the water play and has moved on to sand which i have found up her nose, in her shoes and in her nappy.

Roll on the summer so she can wear croc's or sandals.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 26/02/2010 15:18

Just bought her some garden shoes which are like wellies but shoes, but they have quite good gripping soles so hoping they might be OK for now.

If not she will wear them on beach anyway.

I hear you re. the sand, we go to the beach most weekends and she ends up rolling on the wet sand usually!!

and yes, we will try the crocs and no socks once it is a bit warmer.

i was going to suggest one of those all in one waterproffs as we have them at work for the kids that like to play in the rain, and they are great. I got mine for DD from waterproofworold.com, they were really good and quick

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 27/02/2010 09:14

That is who I ordered from yesterday, they said it was dispatched yesterday so hoping it might even arrive today so she doesn't get wet on Monday!
