aaargh - poo

after a little "accident" on way home from school, have spent a good half hour cleaning child, clothes and bathroom. Was going to bin the pants - but our bin has now vanished . Now have to see if DS is actually unwell, or it's just one of those things. I sent him with a fruit smoothie for lunch time - wonder if that might be the culprit .

aaaaaargh. don't know if I should send him into school tomorrow or not - as not got a clue if he's unwell, or it's some sort of food reaction or what....

Poor you. Poor DS, never nice for all involved. If I were you I'd see what the next few hours bring. If it's germs, may develop D&V or D with a temp, that's going round - AGAIN! Does he look poorly? If he just poos, could be the smoothie .

Go get a cuppa and wait a while.

TotalChaos · 24/02/2010 16:16

Have cuppa, low fat crips and 2 low fat biscuits before me right now

Good girl! x

devientenigma · 24/02/2010 17:32

Hate to say it but my ds has had D&V for 5 days seeming ok today. He always just seems himself also when ill. Have fun lol x

claig · 24/02/2010 17:57

very likely to have been the smoothie. Fruit juices do that, even just eating apples etc. can do that

TotalChaos · 24/02/2010 18:02

he's normally fine with a carton of fruit juice, but I don't think he's ever had that brand of smoothie before. He seems perfectly happy and bouncy, have to see how he tolerates dinner...

aaaaaaaaaargh. he's been ok for two days now. So I let him have a 70% fruit juice drink. And two more explosions. Cleaning up the first was grim as had to use station toilets - and loads of snotty comments about the smell from surrounding cubicles . fortunately DS was too distracted to pick up on that. Think I will probably keep him off tomorrow, and phone docs - as need to cover my arse re:attendance and also see if docs think it's worth doing a sample.

was the fruit juice apple or pear? These fruits contain sorbitol which is a laxative. Also many fruit juices contain sorbitol artificial sweetener. Sorbitol causes diarrhea. It is also in many sugar-free sweets such as mints and chewing gum.
Even fructose acts as a laxative for a lot of people. Do you remenber the brand of the fruit juice?

TotalChaos · 28/02/2010 21:52

claig - it was tropicana blackcurrant and apple ingredients are thus:-

Fruit Juice from Concentrate (70%) (Apple (40.5%), Grape (24%), Blackcurrant (5%), Elderberry (0.5%).
Water (30%).

trouble -nope, never got round to trying the probiotic as the poo problems did settle eventually last summer.

btw he's had that juice before several times and been fine.

OP posts:
claig · 28/02/2010 21:57

the apple is very likely to be the culprit. Fruits that contain sorbitol and which should be avoided are :

Prune
Pear
Sweet Cherry
Peach
Apple

but it also possibly contained some artificial sweeteners which could act as laxatives.

But I have personally found that even orange juice is full of fructose and can cause gas.
I would personally only use fruit juice and even fruits such as apples at home.

claig · 28/02/2010 21:59

it's possible that it is interacting in some way with whatever else he is eating, possibly some fibre that he has eaten

claig · 28/02/2010 22:04

just looked it up, good news that it contains
No added sugar or sweeteners.
No artificial colours flavours or preservatives

sphil · 28/02/2010 22:39

Strange coincidence - DS2 had his first poo explosion for ages last night, after having three small bites of an orange yesterday. I should add that this is the first citrus fruit he's eaten for four years (he's beginning to try new foods, which I'm deighted about). The poo had a really horrible smell(unusually horrible I mean)- like parmesan cheese (sorry tmi)

Do you think it could have been the orange? He is also coming to the end of a course of ABs (amoxicyllin) and has started a new high fluoride toothpaste, so I guess any (or all) of these could be the culprit?

TotalChaos · 28/02/2010 22:48

I would put the orange as no. 1 culprit - IME a reaction like that to abs would be nearer the start of the course.

sphil - how's your DS

trouble - what's the name of the probiotic stuff?

well we have slight progress - after 48 hours OK, tonight's poo accident was at least solid and DS almost made it to the toilet in time . fabarooney.

ooh yes please, will mail you. spoke to GP via receptionist yest morning, GP wasn't too interested as DS is well in himself, just said bring him in if no better in a few days, and no point in doing a sample if he's not particularly unwell as previous locum GP said do a sample if diarrhoea is over 48 hours .

and now we have added vomiting to the mix, delightful . poor DS got sent home from school after D and V (I bloody love DS's school sometimes, they showered him and got him to change into his PE kit). I know I shouldn't have sent him in, but was twitchy after the EWO referral last year (for sickness related absence).

OP posts:
sphil · 03/03/2010 18:28

Oh poor DS and you TC. DS2 is fine - it was just a one-off. So I think you were right about the orange.

TotalChaos · 03/03/2010 18:32

When younger DS has had some weird reactions to fruit - he howled and howled for ages after the first time he was given a solid apricot (think he'd been fine with puree) and howled and puked after the first time I gave him a carton of pineapple juice.

OP posts:
sphil · 03/03/2010 23:15

It's a shame if it was the orange - I was so deilighted he'd tried something new, and something brightly coloured at that!

TotalChaos · 05/03/2010 09:26

might be worth having an e-word with saintlydame or one of the biomed ladies to see if its worth trying the orange again then?
