Irlen syndrome and ASD

Morning, thought i would share this with you, as it might be of some help to someone else. If you too, know there is something wrong with vision, but just cant put your finger on it.

Ds is on the spectrum and has had vision 'problems' since he was a baby ie sensitive to bright lights etc, etc. As he has got older, he fails eye tests, but when tested further (drops in eye to look at the back of the eye) no problems found. Reading/spelling similar looking words is also a problem.

Anyhow at eye appointment today, she has referred for an assessment for Irlen Syndrome.

Thought it might be useful to share, as ASD seems to me to be the umbrella term for so many different other disorders and syndromes. This syndrome is often undiagnosed and it appears to be like a kind of visual dyslexia, some really simply help can be put in place to improve things.

Hope someone else will find it useful.

I recently took DS (AS) for an Irlen Syndrome assessment, but he wouldn't co-operate so we couldn't complete it. The lady said it was common in AS children and sometimes she did assessments in special schools. We may try again, although the cost of lenses is high so it will have to wait a bit.
