Auditory Processing Disorder and Vestibular assessments at GOSH

I was just wondering if anyone had gone through these at GOSH?

DD2 is 2yr 8mo and has just been referred for these tests and I would like to know what it involved. I feel she's so young, and a very delayed 2yr old at that so wondered how on earth they were going to manage these assessments.

Any info would be greatly received, thank you.

Fingers crossed you get some answers.

Well it wasn't as worthwhile as I was hoping. We didn't get the vestibular assessment, apparently this wasn't on the referral so we have now been referred for this. So we'll be back up there sometime soon for that.

We had a very thorough hearing test by the audiologists and DD2 has perfect hearing. It was good to have this done, although I didn't have any concerns about her hearing in the first place, but anyway at least we know this is fine.

We then saw the registrar, and she told me that the official APD assessment can't be done until DD2 is 5.5yrs. However, she took a full history and did a few verbal/play tests with her and afterwards she felt that DD2's auditory processing was actually quite good, and that hyperacusis was more likely the problem. This cannot be confirmed though until she has the official assessment at 5.5yrs.

So, not much to report I'm afraid.

This getting assessments mallarchy is really frustrating - it always seems to be 1 step forward, 1 step to the side! At least, GOSH are being thorough and you and your DD have hopefully taken a step in the right direction mumgoingcrazy . Did you get to see Dr Sirimanna? Do they know how severe the hypercausis is? What strategies have they suggested in the interim? Have they 100% ruled out Auditory Processing?

Hello oldenglish, no we didn't see Dr Sirimanna, we saw 2 audiologists first then an appt with one of his registrars. I still felt she knew her stuff and was very clued up with APD. DD2 seems to go through phases, we in a very good patch at the moment and her hyperacusis seems very mild. A couple of weeks ago however I couldn't even take her into a shop. APD is definately not ruled out and won't be until she has the official tests. However, since the OT dx'd APD (when DD2 was 18 months) she has got much much better. A year ago, you could ask her a question and it was take her a good 10 seconds before you got a response (if you even got one), whereas now it's instant. It's still hard to get her attention but as far as locating sounds and her response to questions she is a lot better.

I was told there isn't anything we can do apart from continue with our Therapeutic Listening Program. TL has sorted out an awful lot of DD2's sensory issues, and it's this that has sorted out a lot of her APD.

So re the APD just do the TLP as and when she needs it and when she is 5.5yrs go back for the official test. Re her vestibular we are now waiting for an appointment back at GOS.

I'm in the process of getting a referal to GOSH for auditory processing disorder. My son is 9 and has a list of other diagnosis ie. Autistic Spectrum, language disorder, sensory integration disorder, recent diagnosis of dyslexia etc.
I've sought the referal because it is already agreed he has an APD, but school is still trying to teach him to read/write using phonics. And he isn't making progress.
I've taught him more words in 5 weeks using a look/say word/rebus approach than school have taught him in 5 years!
My son is mainstream and intelligent but illiterate.
I also have an APD myself. I'm not sure that the tests mentioned would be difficult for me to complete, and yet I definately have AP problems that are severe at times depending on the environment.
I'm excited about the referal to GOSH. But am also worred that these superficial tests may give a result of no APD???

There is an Auditory Processing UK website that has some information.
