Something niggling at me about paed report.

She reports that she heard DS1 "babbling jargon." I was there. I heard him talking sensibly and giving information. She did not understand him.

He has excellent language skills, it's his phonology that is delayed.

Will "babbling jargon" make people more likely to think he has an ASD? Because that is what the paed concluded, but now I'm wondering if she just didn't "get" him.

Could you ring the paed up and ask?

SweetGrapes · 22/02/2010 11:37

I'd say it an important point and worth calling up about.
Dd used to babble jargon, Ds was/is unclear. Two totally different things.

I can't get hold of her, she's really hard to pin down. Will try again later.

Does "jargon" mean made up language?

Have googled, it's a pre-verbal stage. My son has just informed me that his brother is a bugger and doing his head in. That's pretty advanced language use if you ask me! Jargon schmargon.

I suppose I can't ask for it to be amended if it's her observation though?

Not 100% sure Bigweehag. My dd was diagnosed with ASD at 3.6 and SALT put on her report that went towards diagnosis that DD presented with "jargon". To me DD sounded like a mixture of babbling/speaking incomprehensibly.

Although I have to say DD did also present with clear audible speech which was not mentioned in the report - so like Starlight said not sure if SLT highlighted her weak speech traits as a favour!

As I undersdtand it, it can also mean that they are using long words, but not neccesarily with meaning IYSWIM, i.e. they are copying what they have heard adults say, but don't understand the context.

BigWeeHag · 23/02/2010 13:35

Oh, OK. He might do that a bit, but IMO he generally uses them in context. Spoke to SALT, she said there is a really fine line between what is classified as babble and what is classified as poor speech, obviously I understand over 90% of what he says, someone else may not.
