Blue badge for ASD children?

Hi just wondering if anyone has been successful in obtaining a badge for children with ASD. My two boys aged 5 both have a diagnosis and are very difficult to manage physically for me especially when I am on my own because of sensory seeking stuff, lack of awareness of danger etc. It would really help if we could park closer in the places we go to, but I have looked on the relevant websites here in NI but ASD not mentioned as one of the qualifying conditions. Any help even as to how to approach relevant agency and the kind of information that might convince them would be gratefully received!

We got one before getting the DLA high rate mobility award, as my council provides them for children with 'severe behavioural problems' and J's psych filled in the form for us saying that he can't safely walk any distance without tight supervision. Or the other route is to get high rate mobility. J has autism and ADHD. HTH.

yes my ds has one and he has nead it snce he was quite young about 5 or 6 i think he gets dla at highest rate for getting aroud and persoanl care so i think that makes you automatically eligable not sure have you applied for Dla?

I keep meaning to apply for one for dd2 (ASD), when we applied for DLA she was too young for mobility (she was only 2.5), now she's almost 4 so we might be able to get it. Dd2 tends to run off or refuse to walk which is a nightmare when i have dd2 (AS and low muscle tone) to control too. Dd2 gets higher rate care.

Yes have dla for personal care component but nothing for mobility despite me providing huge amounts of information about how difficult it is to manage them physically. I think part of the difficulty is that these things are all applied for on an individual basis i.e for each child and people assume that you can supervise one child closely (just like everyone else does) but the problem is I have TWO kids with ASD and managing them together physically is really hard sometimes. The powers that be never seem to take the two kids thing into account cos they just deal with one application at a time.

We get one for ds1 - now 10 - he is severely autistic with severe learning disabilities. He qualifies for higher rate mobility as he gets higher rate care and has a severe mental impairment.

We started getting higher rate mobility when ds1 was 5.

hairyclaireyfairey · 20/02/2010 18:34

Yes, exactly the same as saintly.
We got high rate mobility at three, ds is now eight.

DD1 was turned down for HRM (she was 3 at the time), but we got the Blue Badge.

Our consultant supported (and suggested) our application.

Our Council DO NOT give blue badges for behavioural issues. However, we argued that her behavioural issues had a physical cause (ie. she has a brain malformation, which is physical), so it is unwarranted to refuse on the basis of the issues not being physical.

She also falls/trips/stumbles alot.

thanks for all the replies - ds2 has SLD also being investigated for ADHD as well as diagnosis of ASD so might pursue the issue in that direction given the behavioural issues involved. thanks again!!
