ds was seen by a private ot when we was at ican and fekt that ds needs a chair with sides as he slumps and does a fantastic fall thing.star chair mentioned

\nhs ot where was was is crap and had gone on maternity leave and no ot to fill he rspace and we have moved and now got to go back to new gp and start referals for ot/physio etc all over again and last time took 12 months plus to get seen.

Can anyone recommend anything not to pricey that i can buy in the meantime he has just fallen of dining chair twice in as many minutes, when were out its easy he just sits in his wheelchair even if does mean his chin on the table , mind thats a whole another story

We had a little low chair & table for ds2 to play at, it was wooden & kind of rounded, semi circular - we borrowed it from playgroup & gave it back when he outgrew the chair.

The OT also gave us some sticky matting that we put on the chairs, it meant he didn't slide in the chairs - again I don't know what it is called sorry!

For eating at the dining table ahve you tried the trip trap chairs?

bubblagirl · 19/02/2010 10:30

i have a booster chair with sides that you could have if you wanted it ds still fits on it his nearly 5 its high backed and has arms too and also the straps to hold them in if this could be of help you can have it it folds down so can be taken out and about with you if needed

magso · 19/02/2010 10:32

Would a high back car booster seat give enough side support at the table?

bubblagirl · 19/02/2010 10:41

its similar to this but i dont have the tray

bubblagirl · 19/02/2010 10:41

so its like a chair on a chair basically

glittery · 19/02/2010 10:54

anon the sticky matting is called Dycem

anonandlikeit · 19/02/2010 11:05

Thats the stuff, its so simple but it really helped!

BriocheDoree · 19/02/2010 13:07

I would also say trip trap, but they are very expensive! (better on ebay, perhaps).
DD only recently stopped sitting in her high chair (it's one that converts to a seat up to age 6 or 7, like the trip trap but a cheaper version). It's made by East Coast and they retail at about 60 quid. There are several versions if you google. I usually put something under her feet when she's at table but she's obviously not as low-toned as your DS.

deepbreath · 19/02/2010 14:46

We were advised to get a Stokke Tripp Trapp for my dd - or the OP mentioned another more supportive chair but that costs over £300 (think she said it was a Breezy).

Mothercare do a rip off of the Tripp Trapp for around £70 that I've seen in the shop, I saw the East Coast one online and I'm not sure if it's as tall as the Tripp Trapp/Mothercare one that are meant to fit an adult on them.

We were meant to be lent one by the OT, but when the delivery driver went to pick it up from the storeroom, they had none left.

herjazz · 19/02/2010 15:02

the babydan rip off of the tripptrapp is pretty good as well. We got one of these from charity shop for a tenner

herjazz · 19/02/2010 15:05

oh and I found them tommy tippee mats designed for sticking a baby's plate on a table to be a v good cheapskate alternative to that dycem stuff. DD sits on it in her cheapskate nottripptrapp to stop her from slip sliding down. Works a treat

cloelia · 19/02/2010 15:15

we had a trip trap chair for dd who has a muscular dystrophy so perhaps similar to yours, and I seem to remember we bodged up a quilted inner from an old high chair to make it a little less forgiving. It is you that has the myotonic dystrophy little one, isn't it? I would suggest an urgent call to the muscular dystrophy campaign, asking for an urgent referral to the regional care advisor for your area; they have really speedy access to a grant awarding group called the Joseph Patrick trust should you want to buy something expensive quickly; or you might find the care advisor could find you something quickly which she has tucked in some cupboard. Hope i have not got the wrong Mumsnet poster!!

Phoenix4725 · 19/02/2010 15:44

hi thanks for all the ideas , looked at the trip trap chair but wondering if ds is bit to podgy to fit in with waist bit on it he is 4.8 and there not enough support on the sides he end up doing his tower of pisa impression.

the mat under neath unfortunatley would not stop the lean dont think my nevers will take another tumble ds head on other side seems to be hard as rock am going have to goggle breezy later

yeah ds has been using a little table and chair buthe wants sit at table with other dc.

Cloeila

not my ds though after talking to few on here ,took it to ds neuro and he agrees it is strong possiablity and is going to test ds

Phoex,, d2'sOT supli a chair very similar to the breezy/trip trap but with better side support.
When you speak to OT make sure you tell them what You want.
I've found as long as I am clear about needs they usually come up trumps.

Phoenix4725 · 20/02/2010 06:06

yeah trouble is annon we got go to new gp to get referals again for all services other than neuro/cleft lip they kept us

took me 2 years of bitching to even get ot and then 3 months just get pair of scissors from her by then i brought them.Guess can only hope that Herts are quicker and i will be quickeer complaining

bubblagirl

bubblagirl · 20/02/2010 09:05

i've text the number i have for you x

madwomanintheattic · 21/02/2010 01:32

breezi can be fitted with arms - and you can put a straightforward lap belt onto a tripp trapp... we've got both lol, one at home and one at grandmas. i think you can get a pommel too... we use dycem under feet as well as bum btw

the stars range is in a whole other league though - depends whether you are wanting to encourage some effort in trunk, or giving max support so that fine motor can be prioritised?

Phoenix4725 · 21/02/2010 07:17

Am aiming more for fine motor control and least impact on my nerves

Been told that ds tone is about as good as it is going to get but will start asking about breezi chair thank you
