ds has verbal ,oral dyspraxia and tests at below 1% for speech and below 2% for receptive is 4.7 .He was in ms with support but this was failin

We then moved across county and i asked for change of placement for speech unit baseon using his ican report

But unit have seen report and they are not sure about ds as they feel his language issues are very bad ,place din unit for morning then in ms with lsa in class in afternoon

Where would that leave us .not keen on special as his cognitave devlopment is normal and is only problems are related to language and Pd d

Not too sure if I have understood correctly.

Have they offered you a place in a specialist unit in the morning and back in mainstream in the afternoon?
Is the unit connected to the mainstream school?

DD3 was diagnosed the same at age 4. She attended a specialist unit from when she started school. The unit was attached to a mainstream school and she did half her time in each. It worked fantastically. No way would she have been able to cope or improve as much as she did if she had either been in mainstream only, or socially, if she had been in the specialist unit only. This worked really well for the first 3 years, then she was ready to be moved to a mainstream school closer to home with a statement.

Sorry, probably not a lot of help, but my experience....

Hi the plan was do unit morning and in the ms side of the school in the afternoon.\this would also be the catchment school and dd attends ms side.

But the statement was drawn up and sent to the unit for them to look but there concern is that ds language problems are extremly severe

I see. Our specialist side of the school was a SALT specialist unit, so it was perfect for DD3.

I would go and have a meeting with the specialist unit teacher and see if you can come to some agreement. One arguement that we used when applying for the unit for DD3 was that we felt that intensive input very early on in her education would mean less input needed on a long term basis and would enable her to meet her potential.

I really hope you get what DS needs so that he can do as well as he possibly can.

DD3 really did not communicate verbally at all until she was 7, even then it took a lot of "interpreting" by me if she spoke to anyone else! Once she got going though, there was no stopping her and now it is the stopping we need to encourage! She was unable to co-ordinate any mouth muscles at all for a long time, but now work very well when she is kissing her boyfriend! She is now 15 years old and to all her friends is just like them. SHe still has residual problems with processing information and complicated by severe dyslexia but she is happy and her character will get her where she wants to get in life.

It is sad, but you may have to fight for your DS to get what you think will be best for him.

maybe start looking at what private provision there is in the area, in case there is something suitable you can fight for?

yes it is a salt unti attached to the school.

I have been in and talked with the head of the unit as dd attends the ms side .She was honest and I did agree there was no way ds would be only able stay in the unit for 1 or 2 years.

we would be talking the whole of his primary education at least but she explained the children they have tend to be of a higher level than ds and this was obvious to me to.Its more about the levbel of input ds will need i and outside the unit in afternoons. , behaviour wise he is pretty good also they tend to getlanguage support split along infants and juniors so 2 lsa covers 2 classes where ds will need the support in classroom more f/t along wit physical needs

It is a lovely little school only 94 kids plus the 16 currently in the unit , guess next step be meeting with the Lea and the unit to discuss what we do next they can hardly insist Ms as if unit has concerns and i defintley feel special is not right placement for for him

TotalChaos , think that is what i am going to do, am hoping fact we are so closed to London might be something available there

just very frustarted as Lea had agreed to speech unit on statement , not named unit but provison .Herts where we are ue to move to had agreed to keep ds in the planned S&l unit as by location was so much nearer .Now unit pulled rug out from us

Phoenix we ahd simialr with ds3, the SLT units have very anrrow criteria IMO nd here they won't take if asd is even a tiny possibility- ASD unit wouldn't take becuase..... yes, quite.

The ethos of getting kids back into MS in a short time is very central and doeslimit the children they can accept I think.

FWIW ds3 is bright but thriving in an SNU, the trickis to find one that ahs awide range of abilities- ds is in no way the brightest of his group. Whereas some units have a very different profile to their kids.

yeah we all agree not going happen for ds.

but Lea say sn not suitable as ds is a communicator just not verbally he signs but there sloppy due to his motor control only sn school is not suitable .

Just not sure where he fits
