may have killed autistic son. Although actually bleach drinking sounds like the sort of awful accident that could happen here if ds1 got it into his head to drink random stuff so am reserving judgment on that.

meerkatsandkookaburras · 11/02/2010 13:56

link isnt working, any chance you know what i can google to find it?

saintlydamemrsturnip · 11/02/2010 13:58

oh weird MN is eating the link each time I post it, taking a word and adding it to the end of the link

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/8510240.stm try this]]

if that fails cut and paste this:

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/8510240.stm

try again

OP posts:
saintlydamemrsturnip · 11/02/2010 13:59

oh that is very weird. The last one I tried snipped the agh and added it to the end of the link.

Cut and paste I'm afraid, MN linking has gone weird!

it all seems a bit odd to me.

Obv we have no idea as to the level of this child's autism, but I find it hard to see how you could force any child to drink bleech. As soon as any of it was ingested the throat would start to burn, so the child would surely refuse to drink enough of it to kill him.

But if it was a child that exhibited strong sensory seeking behaviors, might he have gained something from drinking the initial amount and then not stopped, with terrible consequences.

I really do wonder too whether this was just a horrific accident.

Ihope to Goditwasjust a tragic accident.

If it wsn't I hope they look closely at theslepdeprivation ifeven the neighbours knewof it,as that is sometimes clinically linked to psychosis andmight actually have been preventable via the odd SSD route of actually helping someone.

wannaBe · 11/02/2010 14:30

god I hate the way the dm writes these articles.

"A single mother allegedly murdered her 'severely autistic' son by poisoning him with bleach while social workers prepared to take him into care." it's all there in that one sentence isn't it? single parent of severely disabled and the inadequacy of social services all rolled into just those few words.

I amfailing to seethe link....???

The other child wasuunhamrmed so whatever happened,it wsrelated tothe severely disabled child,no?

And its such a shame that our press still don't understand what alledged means

donkeyderby · 11/02/2010 14:45

I read on the BBC news website that the mum had drunk bleach too. If so, it would suggest it was less likely to be accidental perhaps?

There's always at least one case of a parent murdering their disabled child every year. I remember them all.

saintlydamemrsturnip · 11/02/2010 14:54

I don't even know why I would try and read between the lines of a DM article but I wonder whether SS were trying to move the boy into resi against his mother's wishes. If so really illustrates the need for good short breaks etc .

I was also a bit struck by the nieghbours saying how she was shattered and never had any sleep. No-one offered to help her out then

"I was also a bit struck by the nieghbours saying how she was shattered and never had any sleep. No-one offered to help her out then" well quite. It's amazing how much people know after the event isn't it and yet people seem not to want to get involved.

And if they knew she didn't get much sleep then obv they must have known her well enough to talk to, so well enough to ask "is there anything I can do?"

Of course some people murder their disabled children - the woman who drowned her dd with CP springs to mind. But equally some people do kill their children, and themselves out of desparation.

But I don't like the implication that she couldn't cope therefore murdered him. After all, maybe it was this kind of behavior she found it hard to cope with. Maybe he had no concept of danger and put himself in dangerous situations such as trying to drink bleach. And maybe this time he succeeded.

Pmsl fio. I do agree. I think people are so caught up in their own lives, they hear the dreadful screaming coming from the house in the middle of the night or see the big bags under the woman's eyes and think 'wonder what's on tv tonight'.

The more challenging your child is the less likely you are to get help (from neighbours or SS it seems),

very sad, what a shame she didn't get help.

imusthavechocolate · 11/02/2010 22:07

Very sad situation, again. Seems to be more and more cases like this, would like to know the full facts and don't suppose they will come out for a while.
pmsl at neightbours helping, ours just move!! another for sale sign up recently, what can you do?

5inthebed · 11/02/2010 22:12

My first thoughds on hearing this was "why wasn't she getting the help she needed".

Poor woman, poor child. Her other son has been taken into care as well, although I did hear she has 4 children. Not sure where the other 2 are?

saintlydamemrsturnip · 11/02/2010 22:22

The more I hear about this the more awful it sounds. I wish it had been accidental. Poor boy. So vulnerable and killed by the person who should have protected him. Sounds as if he was let down by many - people and agencies.
