DD1 is having her statement review and secondary school transfer assessment next month. We feel that a MLD secondary school would be better suited for DD1, rather than MS, but I need to write a letter. Am completely lost, I have no idea what I am doing, can anyone help me please?

as a starting point, go through her current statement and say how the MLD school will fulfil it and MS wouldn't/would struggle?

I find if you're struggling with a letter, it's always best to do it as a list of bullet points, eg "There are several reasons why we think our daughter would strugglle at a ms secondary, and why we believe a MLD school would be better suited to her particular special educational needs:"

  • she has had problems at ms primary with...(give examples of the worst problems, with dates and specifics if necessary)
  • at a ms secondary, these problems would be maginified due to increasing peer pressure of teens and a more complex curriculum
  • at a ms secondary, she would have to find her way to several classrooms a day, and she would not cope with this level of complexity. Increased anxiety levels might lead to [some kind of meltdown?]
  • a ms secondary would provide a health and safety risk, as there is more chance of her leaving the building or getting lost in the larger premises
  • at secondary school, she would lag behind the curriculum to such an extent that she wwould probably be unable to access [50%] of the lessons given (any proof of that, anything you can quote from primary school teacher reports as evidence in " "?).
  • as per her statement, she needs (quote from statement a line or two which makes the point that she needs a school that caters for her particular needs, or small step teaching , so they can see that your legally binding statement won't allow them just to fling her in any old school)

Sorry, I am just making these points up, but it is just easier if you have a list of bullet points as it automatically gives your letter a structure. Do you have any professionals saying she has MLD, as you could quote them in another bullet point if so

Good luck
