Should ds miss playtime to do work with learning support person

DS is every energetic and has what the school believe to be dyslexia. (long story....head teacher does not believe in labels) He has half an hour with the Learning Support person once a week. He is having to use his break time to do this. Whats is worse is that there is no quiet area so whilst he is working he can hear them playing outside. Is this normal or should the school not be able to accomodate him in some other way?

No if he is dyslexic, he would have had to concentrate harder during lessons than anyone else in the class, he needs his break. Have you seen the "dyslexia friendly school pack", it is published by the BDA, if you go to their web page, you can access it there, it includes info for primary and secondary schools. With do and donts for supporting a dyslexic child.

How old your son is, if he is at the end of year one, he is old enough to be tested for dyslexia and the sooner appropriate intervention is given the better. The LEA should have a policy on how they support dyslexic children (usually BDA dyslexia friendly pack). If the head is reluctant to refer on to Ed Psy, you can self refer. I dont like labels, but sometimes you need the label to access the appropriate support needed for your child. If he is struggling, his confidence levels can plummet.

Our DS head said that she didnt believe in dyslexia and DS would become increasingly aware that he wasnt as bright as other children. The ed psy report showed he had normal cognitive ability with severe dyslexia. We changed schools.

Good luck

Thank you Dolphin. I will have a look at the site. He is in Yr2. I know what you mean about labels but have had the same problem no label no support. I have had to push for everything. He has made some progress but it has slowed again which I understand is common with a dyslexic profile. Its just really frustrating.
