This study only covers 6 months because, presumably, that's as long as they had and wanted to observe some subjects after stopping the med. DS has been on it for just coming up to 2 years now, it is a life saver!

sounds good this davros, am hoping my ds will be prescribed something at the specialist unit cos he has really bad agression and temper tamtrums espeically if his "schedule"is not stuck to ridgidly

If you're read to go the meds route Jenk then I would hope they know about this drug. If not, maybe you can gently ask them? They hate to be told what to do! Side effects we've had are weight gain, some loss of bladder control mostly as intermittent bed wetting, possibly more sensitive skin as he seems to scratch a lot. It helps with sleep although that has now worn of with DS but was great at first! Biggest downside is having blood tests, ugh! Without this med I think we would ALL be in residential care by now!

My 10 year old has just been put on this, he has been taking it for a week, he has AS and has been so depressed and stressed out and been self harming.
Already we cannot believe the difference in him (although the real test will of course be when hes back at school as that causes his stress)

He is smiling, loving and happier!!
He is not sleeping better yet but still early days I guess.
He did have one day where he was sick but ok apart from that so far I think.
Specialist has given about 3 weeks worth so I need to let her know how he is and get more prescribed etc.
I just pray this helps him cope with school.
Its great to hear such reassuring things about the good effects of this drug.

Risperidone seems to be a great drug for adult use as well (much better tolerated and more effective than earlier antipsychotics), and I think I saw something somewhere about its use in adults with Aspergers too.
Off thread, but Sapphire are you actually called Sapphire? Our dd1 is. Ds1 is nearly 8 with Aspergers, and I am reassured by the thought that if his aggressions gets worse rather than better as he gets older there might actually be something we can do to help.

Sapphire, sounds good so far! I've got a friend with a VERY hf child but who suffers massively from obsessions and anxiety. He has been on this too and it has helped a lot, in fact she tried to keep it low and get him off it but he was unmanageable so she's just decided to go with it and give him as much as he needs (within reason of course).

We tried Mark on Respiradone for about 6 months, the good effects were minimal for him and it had a mild sedating effect that I didn't like.

The biggest side effect of him taking it was t6he weight gain, it was quite dramatic. In the end we asked for him to be taken off it as it helped so little and I was afraid of being left with a huge child to restrain when things were bad.

We saw massive improvements AND massive weight gain. The weight gain has stopped and he has actually lost weight and so is normal now. DOn't know why that happened. THe sedating effect for us, just made him sleep at bedtime, didn't change his personality or make him dopey generally.

We have been using risperidone, combined with prozac, on my 10 year old son who is autistic. We have had good results. The risperidone does make him drowsy but we give it to him late evening so he sleeps really well now. As for the weight gain, we have been able to control that.

Does anyone else use this combination?.

Hi Davros - thanks for posting this. My DS (9½) was taking this until January this year. It worked brilliantly controlling the aggressive outbursts. However, the main side effect was weight gain - an enormous amount in an incredibly short space of time!!! Bless him, DS, is still carrying the weight although with his increased height he is beginning to lose it. It's going to take some time, but at least his appetite has returned to normal (although i think he could still eat for England
