Hi, My daughter is due to go to a sn boarding school after feb half term. She'll be there for the whole schooling term, only coming back home in the holidays.
At the moment I get DLA, Housing benefit, carers allowance and income support, and child tax credits.
I keep getting told different things, as far as i understand i can only claim the CA and DLA for the weeks that she is at home.
Does anyone have any experience of this and how it works? If that is the case what about the child tax credits and the disbility premium.
Would just like to hear from anyone else thats been through this and how it all works.
thanks.
xx

I haven't had experience of it yet, but I've looked into it as I'm looking at residential schools too.

Yes DLA gets reduced after they've been boarding for a certain period. But you would still get it for holidays and pro-rata for any weekends home. You would have to inform the DLA people which weeks she is at school and they work it out for you. But it will still be the same claim - they don't make you do the application each time, thank goodness! It is only the care rate that is affected, I think mobility remains the same.

Carers is affected but you may still get it for weekends she comes home, something to do with counting the weekend as fulfilling the 35 hr requirement. But if you're planning to return to work then it may be affected by your hours or wage.

I believe CTC isn't affected at all, as the rules are slightly different and as long as the child has an ongoing claim for DLA, you can still receive the CTC disability premiums, even if DLA payments have stopped during term time.

This is my understanding of the rules - haven't actually been through the process yet so I stand to be corrected!

After 3 years of endless meeting and discussions, rewritten statements (oh god the list is endless) and 2 adjourned tribunals the end is in sight for my blind, autistic 11 year old boy. he is now back at junior school for the 5th year and the tribunal is going to take place in October. Birmingham City Council has said now we will not fund a place at residential school again. I am sticking my heels in and seeing it through to the end. i have not been able to work for 12 years and so if he is accepted i shall have no choice but to try and find a job

wish me luck!!
