You need to get a referral to your incontinence nurse (nice name !) via your HV or GP.

They will carry out an assessment and prescribe whatever they deem suitable.

Hello.

dd is 4 and in size 6 nappies which are the biggest you cn get insupermarkets.

I think if a child is 4+ with continence issues you are entitled to free continence aids (I think 4 nappies/pads a day)

It may be worth asking your gp top refer her to your local continence service to see what they can provide.

Its rubbish about 4 nappies a day. We get 6. They are delivered once every 3 months.

The kids use the boxes to make dens!

I have prescription pull ups for DS he too is age 5 and in 7-8 clothing. I get them on prescription but my friend told me the other day they are exactly the same ones she buys for her toddler but in a bigger size (his say size 6 on them), I will ask her what brand they were if you like as it was not the same brand as my packets say - I am thinking they may be cheaper and available from supermarket.....

There was a lot of umming and ahhing about them giving DS his pants on prescription as he has no formal medical DX yet, apparently they only relented as he receives high rate care DLA. I think it varies from area to area what criteria they use to decide.

My large 6 year old still fits nicely into the size 7 libero nappies he gets from the incontinence service. Not everywhere sells them, but when we need to supplement what we get, the huggies superdry (a certain fashion brand clearly overlooked this link, har har) size 6 are actually pretty huge - much bigger than other brands of size 6 nappies.

ouryve · 02/02/2010 21:46

meltedmarsbars, DS1 used to get loads, before we went to pull ups (which they can't supply to fit him) for most of the day, but DS2 has only just qualified into the service and he is only allowed 4 a day. Also, DS1 is on a 2 month cycle and DS2, 3 months. I think it's something that's being phased in.

meltedmarsbars · 02/02/2010 21:51

Is the 4 per day rule for children learning continence control then?

Dd2 has no chance of continence. Maybe thats why they've taken pity on us.

aSilverLining · 02/02/2010 21:53

hmm I don't think my asda link will work actually as you need to be logged in to the grocery website, but they are ASDA First Pants size 6 XL, 3 packs for £10

bhw666 · 02/02/2010 22:10

thank u , ur all stars!!! i shall be calling my wonderful(lol very sarcastic here) gp in the morning so they can promise they ll call me back and then forget to!!lol.

That might be the difference, though DS2 has no concept of what actually goes on in his nappy, other than it feels uncomfortable and sometimes has to be ripped off immediately as soon as something is in there. :P

MyNewPans · 02/02/2010 22:21

What about pyjama pants?

Lauree · 02/02/2010 22:27

some chemists will order extra large nappies, tena do them, we got them from the enuresis clinic when DS was 5.
Otherwise it was huggies drynites in large which kept us going.

an independent chemist might be able to help, but you should be getting them free, HV might be able to advise better than your GP ( our GP knows nothing about this kind of stuff, or do you have a community paediatrician service?)

If you live near Hackney we have some spare. They're not glamorous, but they work. big enough to fit me!

And to give you hope, DS ( now 6) suddenly decided he wanted to go commando overnight, and two months down the line, he is doing OK... I get him up when I go to be to pee in a bucket in his bedroom in his sleep, he gets back into bed and is (usually) dry for the rest of the night. I just had to trust him ( and put a waterproof sheet over the top as well as underneath.)

If your DD is at school ask to be put in touch with the school nurse. Mine has been brilliant and much more up to speed on services related to children with SN. For example my GP knows about wheelchair services but had never heard of SN pushchairs being given by them, or pull ups on prescription without a medical DX. School nurse much more familiar with accessing services for children.
