So today was Ds's first day on ADD meds. He has been prescribed Equaysium XL 10mg.

he has been doing really well in school recently and has been trying very hard with his behaviour.

I promised him that these meds would help him concentrate better and help him stay well behaved.

but its all gone so wrong.
he came home today with broken glasses. he smashed them to pieces through frustration/anger.
he has had a really bad day and apparently he has been far more anxious than he has for a long time.

please, someome tell me this is just a symptom and that they will settle down and improve. im not sure i want to give him tomorrows dose at the moment

www.netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/100004842.html

"You should also tell your doctor if any other symptoms or side effects are experienced during treatment. In particular, children and adolescents taking this medicine should be encouraged to report any new or worsening distressing thoughts or feelings, anxiety, agitation, irritability, depression, mood changes, or other unusual change in behaviour that they may experience after starting this medicine. If you are worried about your child at any point it is important to talk to your doctor immediately."

In your shoes, I'd not be giving another dose until I'd spoken to whoever prescribed it.

in honesty i was on ritlin as a child and remember the frustration anger and muddy headed ness of it all (yea for wrong diagnosiss)

you have my sympathys and i wish you well,

look into the drug itself and its action on the mind you may be able to convince your doctor to proscribe something else
but as ouryve said report the side effects and discontinue dosage

hiya my ds has been on ritalin since last october aand has been doing so well on them at school and at home we even enjoyed going to a childs party which used to be a definate no no until he started on it but yesterday i was told he had to come off them as they can surpress his white blood cells from working and this came to light after he had a routine blood count taking due to him having anaemia so we are in limbo atm as to what is going to happen next They want to do another blood count in a few weeks to see if the ritalin is the cause of the low white blood count im so worried about it.Ritalin is fine but its when you hear of effects it can have that makes you think twice Thankfully we havent had a bad day with him today but schools not too happy about him coming off them Well mondays another day we will see what it brings

That sounds like a large dose for first day of a trial. Most doctors start at 5mg of regular methylphenidate, see how that goes and if no problems THEN consider XL.

Makes me wonder if you've had the meds thoroughly discussed with you.

Besides, the purpose of an initial trial is to determine whether there are any side effects before proceeding further. It sounds as though this drug and dosage isn't suitable for him. I wouldn't give him any more and would speak with his consultant urgently to decide what to do next.

Usual side-effects would be loss of appetite, tummy aches, headaches etc but you shouldn't see an increase in anger. Was there anything else that might have triggered his outburst at school.

I'm no expert mind you, just going from my own research and extensive conversations with ds's consultant.
