Word Finding

Does anyone have any tips?

DD1 seems to find it really hard to name objects. For example, today she wanted "it got handle, and dippy, dippy, dippy" and "it got stalk and jelly and juicy and mustn't eat stalk" for lunch. I worked out the first one (chicken satay sticks), but the second could be anyone's guess (not grapes apparently).

As her vocabulary is widening, it is getting more frustrating for us both, because she is using more words to describe things, but the descriptions seem more obscure.

She frequently uses colour as her main descriptor, so "it pink and ".

Sometimes she is so frustrated she hits her face and lets out a big cry of frustration

Could you print off pictures of fruits, veg, meat, ect from clipart pictures, so lots to a page?

Could stalk,jelly,juicy be strawberries?

My son had word finding difficulties. I did lots of portage and speech therapy with him,it's got much better but just the other day he called headphones, ear wires (he's 8).
I was give a ton of activities to do with him when he was younger by the SALT.
Hopefully someone on here will either be doing this with their child at present or have a better memory than me and be able to help.
I just replied because my son used to hit himself and scream with frustration from this sometimes too. I hope in time it gets easier for your daughter like it did my son {smile]

I'll have to dig out ds2's word finding programme from SALT, i think it may all be at school, i'll ask his TA in the morning.

I know there was lots of looking at pictures/books & talking about what was going on in pictures & soem structure cards.

We also used lots of symbols & signs to help with his frustrations & this also helped the words come a little easier.
It still takes him ages to say what he wants to say but he doesn't get so frustraed now & the words do come a little easier.

We had to learn not to chip in with guesses while he is still trying to explain himself, this is just more language for him to try & process & makes him more muddled & then more frustrated & on & on.
Apoligies if i am just stating the obvious, but sometimes its easy to overlook the simple things.

That would be great. SALT doesn't really seem to acknowledge the issue, let alone give strategies.

DD also has a very short concentration span, so forgets what she has said so far So what I tend to do is repeat what she has said so far, so that she can start again, like

DD: I like...I like...I like....red...and....

Me: You'd like red...

DD: Red....it small...

Me: It's small and red....

Because otherwise, we get stuck on the "I like" cycle, and she can't move on.

Ds has word finding difficulties. The advise from the salt was to prompt - just as you have described but adding helpful questions once ready and encourage him to find other ways to explain it. You really have to know him well to work out what he means sometimes!!

Ds has the same problem he cannot remember names, particularly people and food.

I am watching the thread with interest for any tips.

I have stuck post it notes all around the house naming everything, which seems to have helped. I cant do this with people unfortunately!

we did exactly as youa re doing, would prompt ds But when prompting take out any extra words & we were told just to prompt with single key words only.

So instead of repeating "you'd like red" Just try prompting with "red"

Apparently the less language they are trying to process the more they can think about what they are trying to say.. but with the help of single/key word prompts only.

Will come back with the SALT strategies later.
