School is going really badly, lots of verbal stims, doesn't speak AT ALL at school, don't know how to help!

DD is really struggling in school this year. She only gets 9 hours 1-to-1 (not enough!!). She hasn't got enough language to tell me what's going on and I don't know what to tell the school to improve matters. At home when she starts going "hah...hah...hah" I just ask her to stop it or distract her, no problem. She is extremely sensory seeking but no chance at all of school making any adjustments as sensory stuff is completely unknown in France. She works every week with a special educator who can't understand why she has problems in school because she's so bright and on-the-ball with her...
Rant, really, but I just wish I could improve things for her. How do I stop vocal stims? What can I suggest to school?

Vocal stims are just the hardest things, as they do them almost unconciously (like I suck my pen, without thinking). We have had some success taking a toy off him, saying be quiet, and he only gets the toy back if quiet. But it only works of course if, like my DS, your DD carries a toy around all the time. We have also tried continuous eye contact while saying ssh, be quiet - every single time he does it - exhausting, but in the end it does quieten him as he thinks "what's the fun in my stim, if every single time I do it, this boring "be quiet" business occurs". It is hard, I feel for you. My boy is part home educated and part school, which helps a lot - is that an option??

sorry to hear your dd is upset, brioche. i'll be interested to hear the replies, because vocal stims are ds's biggest issue. i wonder if anyone has used a white noise generator? i've heard that they can help with sensitivity to noise and i've wondered if they could replace my ds's need for continuous sound?

this website has a link to a free sample of white noise which i suppose you could try when dd is stimming to see if it has any effect? sorry, not something tried and tested!

Is that like leaving a radio tuned out of station? As I've had to do that for DD ever since she was a baby, it's the best way I've found to distract her. As one of her stims before we did this was to pull her eyelashes out. Which wasn't pleasant.

yes, the same idea, loudlass. white noise generators can be made into little hearing aid type devices that are worn behind the ear and so can be used when dcs are at school/nursery if it helps them to concentrate. i'll ask the audiologist that i work with for more information on how well they work in schools.
