Help dont know in which direction to go with DS1...

To give some history DS1 (4.5 years) has always been a what you would call an "aggressive child". Right from the start I dreaded taking him to toddler groups, soft play etc because I could guarantee some other poor child would be hit, pushed etc. Things did improve at preschool and I felt over the summer holidays before he started primary school he had more or less stopped any aggressive behaviour. However, this has all completely gone to pot and his behaviour has deteriorated rapidly over the last few months since starting school full time.

At present i am being called over by the teacher on an almost daily basis because he has been aggressive towards other children. His latest one seems to be stratching faces but frankly you name it he has done it. Whats worrying the teacher (and myself) is that he doesnt seem to have any concept of what he does or that its wrong. He's been sent to sit out the Heads office a couple of times but even this hasnt registered with him. We are now at a stage where he is to have no playtime on his own but instead will walk around the playground hand-holding so he is supervised.

The teacher quite rightly keeps saying she wants to arrange a meeting with the schools SENCO but apparently the SENCO doesnt work full time so we are still trying to find a suitable date and time.

If you were in my situation would you bypass the school and go straight to the GP and explain about the behavioural issues or wait and see what the school has to say first?

Sorry this is a bit rambly I am feeling quite shell shocked at the moment that this is happening....

Even if the SenCo doesn't work FT (most don't, even in primaries with 400+ pupils), they hould be booking an appointment asap in this sort of situation. Have you been asking the school office for the appt. or the class teacher? I would go to the school office and ask to book an appt. with the SenCo, the office are likely to have his/her diary. I would try to book an appt. with the GP, but try to get it for the day after whenever your appt. with the SenCo is, so that you can point out that the school are seeing problems with this a well.

TheMags, welcome . I personally wouldn't be waiting for the school to be doing anything. Make an appointment with your GP, an emergency one if necessary, and ask for a referral to a developmental paediatrician.

Tell him/her that you are concerned because of x,y,z.

Go from there, and then you will be a step closer to answers.

Thanks - I've made an appointment with my GP for next week. This gives me this week to try and get seen by the teacher and SENCO as I guess I really need to try and find out if theres any other issues going on in the classroom as well as the aggressive behaviour.
