Does anybody's PD child have a 'handling belt'?

LEIS have suggested that DS's TA uses a handling belt during PE lessons. This is so that she doesn't have to hold his hand to support him and to let him be more independent in his movements.
I am not too sure. TBH I am sick of all the crap equipment we have to use, and the fact that he looks different all the time (he is in mainstream school). Why can't he just be allowed to do PE in his own style? So what if he falls over - he constantly falls over at home.
WWYD?

My dd had one, it was a truly useless bit of kit in my opinion. Did not really help at all, if she needed hands held she had to have hands held.

I'm not understanding, . My DS2 either constantly falls over in PE or has the TA holding his hand for anything 'balancy'. Why would someone want to put something like that on a child in MS? I'm not trying to be obtuse, just can't see that it would help? Then again, my DS2 is only 6yo, how old is your DS?

I think the idea would be that it gives some core support if necessary, but doesn't restrict the range of movement, so that if he can manage he does so. Hand holding can create dependence, because the more you hold hands, the more the child thinks they need their hand held, so a viscious circle.

I think it is a bit like slack on reigns - as long as the child is doing ok, they don't even notice they are wearing them. But if they take a tumble you can take up the slack so they don't injure themselves.

Loudlass, my DS is 6 as well. And I'm with you - I just don't see the point. Tbh, I am sick of people trying to help his posture all the time! I know that it's probably for the best, but the consultant's have told us to let him get on with what he is doing in his own way, and physio's etc, want us to correct his posture all the time.
He has recently been fitted with a body brace, and I have struggled to get him to wear it. He seems to get really hot in it (Can't control his body temperature well at all), and so I took it to school on Monday to see if they had any more luck than me. He ended up getting so hot that he threw up everywhere - he has never been sick in his life before! Needless to say, it has gone in the bin
I am just sick to death of all the stupid equipment we have to use all the time.
