Right I am not going to wrestle with ds to eat more healthily any longer!

So I need some advice about supplements. He has HFA and eats nothing that does not come covered in Orange Breadcrumbs or is not beige. I call it "The All Beige/Orange Diet"

I have bought some Spatone today (iron supplement) and now need to now what else I should be giving him. Do you thinks this alongside a generic multi vitamin is enough? Anyone else give supplements, if so, what? Many thanks.

Hi my son was refered to a dietian for his poor diet weve got a similar beige thing too,he was prescribed sytron(iron) and ketovite (multi vitamin) they said they would have like to have given minerals but they only come in tablet form.

debs40 · 31/01/2010 19:09

We use the Bassetts chewy vits. How old is your son? My DS is nearly 7 and is still very fussy but getting better - started eating school meals!!

aSilverLining · 31/01/2010 20:33

My DS likes the 'beige' diet too. It is on my pick your battles list but TBH it is not top priority. I think it was Attila on here had mentioned the other day she has had some very slow success with her son, and I believe Riven's son also eats more now than e used to - I am kind of hoping DS will expand his diet with age {optimisitic}

You have my sympathy, I find it hard when we eat out anywhere, but also as a foodie I find it quite sad and upsetting that he doesn't enjoy all the varied foods out there.

I had that iron stuff while pg and couldn't bear it, it made me gag!... has he tasted it yet?!?

thesteelfairy · 31/01/2010 20:36

Thanks for replying. Ds is also nearly 7 and hell would freeze over before he would eat school meals . I have been using the Bassets chewy vitamins as well. Will google sytron and ketovite.

We have an autism centre near us where you can go and make appointments to talk about issues such as diet etc. Think I will do that. Thanks for your suggestions.

I thought that about the school meals too My DS would rather starve to death than so much as sniff a strange meal - he even takes offence at my plate sometimes.

You must be over the moon Debs I know I would be.

I stopped being so fussy with DS2 last year (even started a thread about wanting to be firmer, but was talked out of it ) and it has helped a bit at mealtimes. His diet hasn't greatly improved, but he will lick things (a huge step).

He is a monster at taking medicines of any variety, so we buy him Innocent smoothie drinks. Expensive but makes sure he gets those added vitamins.

Can't remember who it was who gave me some fab advice, possibly Silverfrog, but if you want to introduce new foods, start off by giving your DS the usual beige stuff, and put a tiny amount of new food on the plate. Even if he won't eat it he will get used to it being there. This worked for us with a couple of foods, like carrots and strawberries.

thesteelfairy · 31/01/2010 20:46

asilverlining My ds does that too. If I am eating something with veg, fruit, sauce, gravy, noodles, wet looking in fact anything that is not pizza, fish, sausage or battered chicken and chips, he cannot look at it. He comes to talk to me but looks behind him or to the side while he is talking so he doesn't have to look at my plate.

I always put a small piece of veg on his plate whatever we are having and he will taste broccoli and eat 4 peas, no more, no less and the odd satsuma. Also orange juice and a carton of apple juice every day.

I am planning to put the Spatone in his orange juice, worried now he might sniff it out and refuse to drink it!

Hmm ... I would be careful. My GP advised me to try freshly squeezed (by myself) orage juice to help DS's constipation instead of his usual concentrated juice or cordial. I did. I seived out the 'bits' with a tea strainer. He sniffed it suspicously. He drank a sip. He spat it out. He was sick. He did not touch juice of any kind for nearly 2 months. Cost me a fortune in milk and made his bowel troubles even worse.

He is an awkward little thing.

My DS will grudgingly accept medicine regardless of taste oddly as long as I have his beaker at the ready for straight after.

Mine will eat apples and bananas and dried apricots thankfully, and the odd raw carrot stick so not too worried, his diet could be a lot lot better but it could also be a lot worse.

It's a minefield isn't it!!

5inthebed · 31/01/2010 21:00

When I say carrots, I really mean carrot, as it is a sigle slice of one. Has to be a slice of, not cubed or a stick of .

Yes it is a minefield! And it is god awful when they stop eating something they used to love.

anonandlikeit · 31/01/2010 21:13

ds2's paed advised Minadex, I have an unused bottle in the cupboard, cna't get him to take it.
Good luck!

thesteelfairy · 01/02/2010 19:16

Thank you all for your replies.

Well I put the Spatone in his OJ this morning and he drank it no problem. So feeling OTT happy about that . The Iron thing has been my big worry as he eats no red meat or leafy veg. Also going to use up the rest of the Bassets vitamins and then buy the minadex, he will take medicine and if that is the best one then I will go with that.

He had a good meal tonight actually, chicken, noodles and a tiny floret of broccoli with apple juice. Not bad as meals go.

Just a word of warning - I use the spatone as I am routinely anaemic. BUT I can't cope with a whole sachet in a day (and I'm an adult), if I have a whole sachet, I get VERY constipated (sorry if TMI). I would watch his BM's tomorrow, it gave me terrible tummy pains as well. I have found that I can easily manage 1/2 a sachet a day.

thesteelfairy · 02/02/2010 17:58

Thanks loudlass will keep on eye on that side of things. He has had it for two days now and no problems so far.

bubblagirl · 06/02/2010 12:31

regarding the breadcrumb would he eat the chicken and veg fingers from birds eye they are fab filled with goodness but look unhealthy iykwim

my ds HFA went through phases of only eating certain foods but his diet is really varied and probably better than mine now lol

we added new foods alongside his food and we had sticker chart to show which foods he tried whether he licked or bit small amount and we would tick it off and we had list of foods we wanted him to try and we worked down the list never forced or made an issue of it just kept trying lots of praise

also used to get him to help me with it so made pizza and got him to handle the veg and toppings he didnt eat any but he still was able to help touch and make food

bubblagirl · 06/02/2010 12:33

ds loves these

SueSylvester · 06/02/2010 15:42

Would tempura veg be a runner at all, ie vegetables in batter? Beige on the outside but veggie on the inside, it worked somewhat for my son,

I give my son WellKid multivitamins. They have vitamins, minerals and iron in them. They are fruit flavoured tablets that you can chew (not the jelly kind). However as my son won't eat anything like that I crush the tablet between two spoons and mix into his porridge in the morning. You can also buy this as a syrup for toddlers and I think you could probably increase the dose if giving it to older children. I got them from Boots on line. Not all branches seem to stock them but will order them I think.
