KENT KIDSwith statements - Yr 6 - 2010 secondary intake

Has any other mother whose child is in yr 6 and has a statement heard where their children are going to school in September.
My ds, has a full statement and we are trying to get him into a Moderate learning needs school in September - (which would be as secondary transistion) and we STILL haven't heard. I was told we would hear by the end of January. I was told by his AEN that we would hear by the end of January one way or the other.
I have spoken to his AEN today and she informs me that the school is being pushed to taking two classes for 2010 (the school would then take 24 kids that yr)
I am beyond freaked out. His AEN will not tell me anymore.
Do you think that some of the other mothers know if their kids have a place and some of us are being left hanging.

TIA

. In one way, I would imagine that they haven't told ANY of the parents, but it must mean that the SN peer group for that year must be a lot larger than previous years and the LEA is basically deciding whether it is 'more financially viable' to have a second class at the SN school, or to pay for 1-2-1 support for half the SN DC's in MS. That's my (uneducated) guess anyway. What is your LEA's published date to release MS school placements to parents? As in my LEA, they can delay letting the SN parents know if they have the school of choice until the same day. So if, like my area, the date for the placements for MS is the end of March, then theoretically, the LEA could 'keep you in the dark' until then, IYSWIM. I would however, be concerned that there is effectively 24 DC's needing 12 places at the SN school, and what will the LEA do with those that don't get a place if the school can't/won't take an extra class...And how severe on the scale your DC is (as if they HAVE to ration places, it will be done on a greatest need first basis). In my area it's done by 'alloting' each child in a situation like this an A, B, or C. My DD got a C for her year group, and the school could only take A's that year, so she's in MS. (she's not got a statement yet though, long story ). I'd personally phone LEA once a week until they tell you...

The SEN COP says that 'The statement must be amended no later than 15th February in the year of transfer' for the transition to secondary (section 8:132). So you will definitely know within the next few weeks.

Our LA are still consulting with schools for DS (Yr 6) - we only got a first statement a few weeks ago so we are a bit behind in the process. Agree that it's a nailbiting time! DS is hard to place and they have asked 19 schools so far if they can take him.

I have put in a DPA request to find out which of the schools have agreed to offer places - you could try the same but they have up to 40 days to respond so no guarantees that you will know before 15th Feb. However, it may show useful information about your case/priority if they don't name your preferred school and you want to appeal.

I am in Kent but not KCC. We heard about our year 7 placement just before xmas. Some of my friends have heard about their placements but others haven't yet. Seems some panels have yet to meet.
We had a visit from a teacher from the school just before the panel met.
Although I know you should hear by Feb 15 my firends with older childen have not found this to be the case. One of my friends last year didn't get a place until just before the summer holidays, obviously each case is very differnt.
Probably going up to a two form intake would take some consultation between LEA and school.
Hope you hear soon, we didn't have an alternative suitable placement and knew there were only two available spaces at our school of choice. I do know how you must be feeling.
PS personally I don't think they would allocate any places at that school until the LEA and school know how many children they will take in Sep.

If you haven't heard by the February deadline do an email complaint to this lot. We did it and the LEA hated having their arses kicked and responded quickly.

jiggles01 have you asked your local partnerships with parents for help. They were a big help to me when I was going through the statementing process. And in the last few weeks when I have been making preparations to fight to get him into Highview, which I didn't need in the end which has stunned me.
Good luck.

I am quite sure lea will not budge on prop statement ,we are going just to show we mean business.By the way i am also new.DS is working on levels 1 nearing a 2. our argument will be despite intensive 1-1 2o hrs and with increasing help (he started on 10 hrs in yr1 then 15hrs yr 3 now 20 hrs yr 5 ) he will fail w/out 1-1 in h. school." not best practice to have LSA sitting next to them " His SLT will drop from 21 blocks a year to 5!To me he will clearly fail while trying to access KS3 while on KS1.Ijust have to convince everyone else but prepared to battle!
