he has previously been seen by cahms who were unsure. But as time goes on it seems more and more likely. Who would I speak to/see about it?

ps he is 8yo (just)

I would either contact GP, or go through the school route talking to Senco, school nurse, maybe ask for a referal to Ed.Psy...
Good luck with everything.

i might try the GP then - i didn't think of that. I have mentioned it to the class teacher and she said she hadn't seen him hand flapping aqnd that he was a bit quirky . It's more the social side I was worrying about

def go to GP, quickest routue in our expereince. hth

I would go to the GP, we were referred to a paediatrician and seen by him within 6 weeks of our GPs appointment. Apparently there are children in ds's school that have been waiting 18 months to be seen via the school route.

Apparently, one thing that helped speed things up for us was our writing a sort of historical briefing document for the GP to send to the Paed with the referral. We just put down everything we had ever noticed about ds that we thought was unusual and gave a brief background, ie type of birth, weight, health history etc. The paed said it was really useful for him to have. It also helped us to stay on track during the appointments (I tend to go hopelessly blank the minute I get in front of a doctor).

Your best bet here is to visit the GP asap with a view to getting a referral to a developmental paediatrician.

Do not bother with going via the school nurse; it will take an awful long time if you did that and time here is of the essense.

BTW teachers are not trained generally to spot indicators of any autistic spectrum and special needs as a whole is only briefly covered.

Ed Pysch as well cannot make any medical diagnosis; what this person can do though is make recommendations for your son's educational needs with regards to his schooling. I would be asking the SENCO if the EP can come in to observe your son.

Attila - the EP has been in twice since he was in nursery - her reports come back one page long with just basic facts - no recommendations or anything -

if he has poor posture/ is uncoordinated etc, i would susggest trying to find a sensory trained OT (we found one privately) to see if he has any retained reflexes (google this) - if so they can give you exercises to help. this has helped us.

have also done therapeutic listening thru sensory trained OT and this has also been useful.

'I have mentioned it to the class teacher and she said she hadn't seen him hand flapping aqnd that he was a bit quirky'

That's one of the problems, people have met one child with Asperger's and think that they can generalise. Mine doesn't flap at all, his stims are different.

lisad123wantsherquoteinDM · 25/01/2010 22:48

my DD1 who has a informal dx never hand flapped, but did hand twirl instead, but DD2 who is a ?? does hand flap, so yes every child with asd is different. Try and get some of his stimming on video to take to appointments.
