Have just been reading a Tony Attwood book and he mentions the criteria for AS is "speech and language problems and non-verbal communication problems".
I thought speech probs=ASD and non speech probs=AS
Have I misunderstood?

Peachy - yes, have read SPD. It is an uncannily accurate description of my daughter . Hers is a complicated case as she also has a moderate hearing loss. We were refered to a different hospital and met a wonderful Dr in audiovsetibular medicine who specialises in children and unusual cases. She is the 1st professional who actually asked lots of Qs about DD2 to look at her holistically, and the 1st to be angry that DD2 had not recieved appropriate support nor a proper investigation, and the 1st to say time is of the essence. She is determined to get to the bottom of DD2's language problems and will be running tests/reviewing reports to see if DD2's problems are solely hearing related or a seperate difficulty. She is obviously informed on autistic issues judging by her Qs (response to routine/sensory issues/social issues etc) Thankgod I now have her to help DD2 - at last a professional who is interested and wants to find the answers!

oh Peachy - 1 more question for you please: if dx'd with SPD what happens next: does it mean being classified under the umbrella of ASD, does it mean extra support in school as does it qualify as grounds for a statement or not? I'm jumping the gun here but need to be better informed just in case iykwim.
(thanku)

technically (and I know somecouncilsrun dodgy schemes) a dx isn't needed for a statemnt, it should be dealt with on the basis of rpesenting child- both mine had statements before diagnosis.

However, operationally there are some dodgy practices out there!

SPDwould certainly be a useful reference tomake on an application if you got it as a DX.... i've hreard differing views on whether it is part of the spectrumbut you could certainly describe it as allied to the sprectrum

Just read the SPD link, they are writing about ds too!

Very interesting sensory processing disorder fits ds like a glove too!

Autism seems to be the umbrella term for lots of disorders.
