Ds1 has a trike - but where do we use it?!

Couldn't believe our luck, we managed to get ds1 a Mission Trilogy from Freecycle. He is thrilled with it, he got to the stage of cycling a few yards on two wheels, but can't manage to balance, steer and brake, so it was causing lots of upset.

Thing is, that it is massive (it's a 20" one). If he goes on the pavement with it, it's goign to be almost the width of the pavement! It takes up the entire boot so I can't take him out in the car with it.

What do other people do? Do I jsut let him go ont he pavement and ignore the glares?

Ignore the glares - say "isn't it wonderful what equipment you can get for disabled children!!" and smile ever so sweetly at the glarers!

How far is it to the park?

He has every right to have fun on his trike!

It nto too far to the park, only a couple of roads away.

Half a mile to the local shop/library, which is what I am hoping for. It has a massive basket he can load up

The dts and I used to cycle to the library and out past the park to visit ponies and geese I've really missed that nwo they are at FT school and we can't go with ds. He would love it.

I am so jealous!

We borrowed one from sn pre-school when dd2 was about 4, and it had supportive seating on it and straps to attach her feet to the pedals - she hasn't the capabability to put her feet on the pedals herself, and couldn't sit on a bike or trike herself.

We have a lovely pic of her from then - she loved it too, especially with siblings whizzing past her on their bikes.

So I bought her a bike klaxon for her wheelchair!

at the klaxon!

This was posted on freecycle as a ladies trike, couldnt believe my luck that it was exactly what we needed.

ds will be a terror on it. They have a variety of them at a sn playground near us. Its TVAP in Slough, if that's anywhere near you?

Last time we went, he spent hours racing round and round the track with the other kids, having a whale of a time. He can pedal fine, though still rolls them quite a bit, even with three wheels! He jsut lvoed actually being able to keep up with the others and had an almightly meltdown when it was time to leave!

On the pavement ( assuming you live in an area that has pavements) till you are happy he can learn to ride on the road. would a tail gator bar work between your bike and his trike?

If he on pavement you will need to work on his pavement manners, ie stopping and letting people go past at wide bits, NOT mowing people down and not riding one wheel off the kurb and dumping himself in road.

HAve fun at teh park.

chopstheduck · 22/01/2010 07:48

at pavement manners, that will be interesting. ds1 has asd, will take some doing!

A tailgator is a very good idea, tho his trike is prob heavier than my bike, so not sure if it would work. I think I will probably be runnign alongside so he doesn't mow people down, will get very fit!

yep pavement manners are not always easy to get them to learn.... BUT going under a bus cos you have just tipped off pavement is often terminal. And running people down can also be messy. You may be running along side for a while. Keep you fit!
